Question of the Week

Fellow Duffers,

Here is an interesting video tip that we have up on our
video site http://www.evtv1.com. Many of you know Wally
Armstrong because he writes so much, or perhaps because of
his simple traimning aides that really help you understand
the golf swing.

Check out the video at:

When finding your ball position with your pre-swing routine, you
want to make sure it’s in the right place. That’s why we want to
start with the right foot behind, aim the club and place the
left foot approximately 2 inches past the ball, then widen your
stance. It will be narrower with a wedge and wider with a long
iron, I have a 6 iron so it’s somewhere in between. But that’s
how you find your ball position.

Why do I want the ball there? Because my left arm and the club
form the radius of the swing and the bottom of the arc will be
right beneath the point where my left arm should be pointing at
the ground., that’s about at my arm pit. So I want the golf ball
just behind that so that I can strike the ball first and then
take a little bit of a divot in front. Notice how when I measure
off my club keeps clipping that grass just in front of the ball.
That would be ideal ball position for a 6 iron.

Now if I were hitting a driver, the ball would be a couple of
inches farther forward, because it is teed up. As I widen my
stance notice how my armpit is a little farther back. The ball
is off my left heel, I’m wider. The wider I get, the farther
behind the ball I tend to be with my head. I can test this in
practice by taking a little baby swing and I should be able to
take that ball right off of the tee. This is a real good test
when you practice to make sure your ball position is correct.
So remember, get the ball position right. It should be very near
the bottom of the arc, a little behind the bottom of the arc
with an iron, at the bottom or slightly in front of the bottom
with a wood. If you do that, you’re all set and again, back to
the routine, the three steps helps you ensure that you do it
the same way and gives you a chance to have the same ball
position. It’s very critical for solid contact, without solid
contact it is hard to shoot low scores.

All good golf swings are built around the pre-swing fund
mentals. If you get those right you have a chance to make a
good golf swing, if they are wrong you are in trouble. The
best way to get a good routine is to go about it in an
orderly fashion.
First, you have to simply pick a target line, pick a golf
club, pick a swing motion and make a shot decision. A lot of
times a practice swing will help you do that. Second, once
you have selected your target line the best take your grip is
right at the side of the ball with your arms hanging naturally.
Bring the club up at waist height in front of you and check
both your grip and club face. Third, address the ball in this
simple 1,2,3 routine. I start by standing further away from the
ball than my actual stance will be.

1) I move towards the ball with my right foot, placing it at
a distance away from the ball where it will be in my stance but
my foot is placed just behind the ball. I aim my club to the
target as I place it behind the ball and I measure for my
posture and my balance by hanging forward from my waist with my
arms hanging down naturally. Most of my weight at this point is
on my right foot.

2) Next I move my left foot forward and place it a couple of
inches in front of the ball, which is the correct position for
irons.

3) Last I move my right foot further behind the ball to get
the necessary width of my stance for balance to make a swing.
While I am doing this I am zeroing in on the target line by
keeping my eyes on it, I am waggling my club and I am getting
myself set to hit the golf shot. Last of all, I make my swing.
Notice how I hold the finish. I rest the club behind my back on
the follow through, then relax the club in front of me. Next I
watch the golf ball. The golf ball is sending me back messages,
I need to learn from what that ball does in relation to how the
swing felt. If you get those pre-swing fundamentals down
correctly you can close that ball flight in on the target more
times than not. Remember it is as simple as 1, 2, 3. Then swing,
rest, relax and watch your golf ball. Get your pre-swing
fundamentals down, do it over and over again. Do this routine so
that it becomes a habit, you should do it without thinking and
it will really help your game.

Here we have a ball above my feet. When the ball is above my
feet it tends to curve with the slope. If I mentally work to
roll a golf ball along this slope, the ball will tend to work
down to the left. That is the same thing that’s going to happen
in flight with this golf ball. I have to measure to the ball
as I hit this club to the slope the handle gets lower.

For example, if I had a ball up at shoulder level the handle
would be horizontal and I would have to stand a long ways away.
So your adjustments here are farther away, a little taller and
choking down on the club just a little bit and then allowing for
the curvature that you’re going to get from this club face which
is more horizontal the loft is aimed to the left. Let me play
this shot for you.

The first thing I’m going to do is practice swing. Now I’m going
to aim to the right. I’ve already found out from my practice
swing where the bottom of the arc would be. I’m trying to swing
along the slope. Feeling the club to the slope, feeling the body
to the club, going to swing along my body lines and let the slope
curve my ball. Making sure that I stay balanced.

Now I’d like to hit the uphill lie for you. Here we have an
uphill lie. The balls going to go higher. So I expect the ball
to go higher, and a little shorter. I have found that your lofted
clubs go shorter, your straight face clubs actually sometimes go
farther. Because you seem to get them up into the air and keep
them in the air longer. With a 6 iron I can expect the shot to
go maybe about a club shorter. I’m going to fit the club to the
slope as we did on the downhill but now everything is reversed.

I’m further behind it and the club tends to strike the ground
farther up. So I’m playing with a more forward ball position,
but I’m trying to swing along the slope. I want my weight to go
up to the left as much as possible but I want to stay in position
at the same time. That’s exactly what I would expect from this
side. The poor players will stay back too long and pull across it.
The better players will swing along the slope though they can’t
quite complete their weight transfer or they’ll get into their
left side with a little more weight on the right and get a higher
straight shot. The uphill lie is very forgiving, you ought to be
able to play the uphill lie with a little practice.

When the ball is below your feet it’s actually a little farther
away from you if you stood the same number of inches as you
normally would with a given club. So consequently to get down to
the ball, you have to bend down more. Now when you bend over
more you’re very dangerous that you might fall forward on your
toes.

So once you get in that position beside your ball make a practice
swing, bend over and then sit just a little more to get your
weight back so that you can maintain your balance while you’re
swinging. The biggest problem people have here is they tend to
lose their balance and they want to stand up and they end up
topping or hitting the shot farther right. It’ll curve a lit bit
right because of the slope. Just allow for that with your aim,
do your routine, do your practice swing and stay out over the
ball, staying balanced. You’re better off to take an extra club
here and not swing as hard. So that you can maintain your balance,
balance is the key to that shot.
