"Tips... News... And More... All For The Love Of The Game"

Take a moment to answer GopherCentral's Question of the Week:
Should Illegal Aliens receive government subsidized health
benefits in the US?
Question of the Week

Fellow Duffers,
Ah, summer. 90 degree heat, 80% humidity and a golf course.
Note to self: stay hydrated and eat a banana.
I'm off to a charity event at a local club. It benefits
St. Jude's hospital. It's a great cause. St. Jude's and other
organizations like the Ronald McDonald House do a whole bunch
of good for people struggling and suffering. God bless us all.

Make a Power Release
Give the ball a right-hand slap for explosive contact
By Laird Small
GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teacher
This story is for you if...
* You want more distance and accuracy
* You often miss your target to the right
* You don't understand what "release" means
The Standard Advice
Try to square the clubface at impact for straighter and more
accurate shots.
Why it's misleading
Impact lasts only a few milliseconds, so trying to perfect
that moment is nearly impossible.
The Tip You Really Need
A solid release guarantees proper clubface rotation through
impact, so perfect it instead. Plus, it's easier to control
your release. As you drive through the hitting zone, give
the ball a slap with your right hand, changing your right
wrist from bent back to bowed.
Elbow In
Your left elbow should hang tight against your torso as your
hands release. You can't unhinge your wrists if your left
arm bows out (no chicken-winging).
Shoulder Under
Your right shoulder moves under your chin, not in front of
it. This allows your hands to power the clubhead correctly
through impact and then around your body.
KEY MOVE - Active Wrists
Prior to impact your right wrist was bent. Now it should be
bowed. This doesn't happen by itself--"slap" the ball with
your right hand to release the club properly.
Club on Line
A proper release whips the clubhead around your body in a
circular motion and into your finish.

How to Stop It Quick From the Sand
No green, no problem? Here are four easy steps to make it sit
By Todd Sones
GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teacher
Situation
You have a good lie in a greenside bunker, but you've short-
sided yourself and have just a few paces of green between you
and the flag. You need a high, soft sand shot that stops on a
dime.
How to do it
Step 1 - Use your most lofted wedge. Position the ball slightly
forward in your stance and move the handle of the club in-line
with your right thigh to add extra loft to the clubface.
Step 2 - Spread your right foot back and dig both feet into the
sand a half inch for balance. Your shaft should now point just
left of the center of your torso.
Step 3 - Make sure your shoulder line and shaft line form a "T".
Your job is to maintain the "T" by swinging the club with your
arms and your wrists, using minimum shoulder movement.
Step 4 - Keep your chest pointed down and swing your arms and
hands underneath your body. This lets the club enter the sand
with the loft you established at address. Move to your left
side through impact and watch the ball fly high and land like
a butterfly with sore feet.

How to Stop Missing the Sweet Spot
Practice cross-handed to groove solid contact
By John Elliott Jr.
GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teacher
This story is for you if...
* You suddenly start spraying shots
* Your impact feels mushy
* You have no clue what the problem is
The Situation
You thought you had your swing grooved, but a rash of poor
shots prove otherwise.
The Solution
Using a 7-iron on the practice tee, switch the position of
your hands on the grip (left below right) and swing
cross-handed. It will feel awkward at first, but if you stick
with it you'll ingrain the following swing keys that are
difficult to perfect using a normal grip.
Needed Hinge - Since your right hand is on top, your right
wrist will hinge sooner in your backswing and establish an
extra lever for power.
Proper Arm Positioning - The cross-handed grip forces your
right arm to follow the lead of your left-it will fold
correctly as your left arm remains straight.
The Power Approach - You'll also feel a bent right elbow and
extended left arm deep into your downswing-both are vital
for ball compression and power.
