Grandma Bessie
Back in 1996 I was pregnant with my daughter. She was due
November 10. I had been taking care of my husband's
grandmother for the past several years. Bessie was getting
tired and her body started shutting down in August of that
year. She had several heart attacks and had to be placed in
the hospital. On October 16, 1996, she passed away. It was
very devastating for my husband and me because we were so
excited about Bessie getting to see her first
great-granddaughter, and we thought it would give her new
hope and she would fight and live longer. Over the next
couple of days we were preparing for the memorial service
and on the 20th, I ended up in the hospital with Toxemia.
My doctor wouldn't be in until Monday morning, so they gave
me a sedative and told me to get some rest. I woke up at
about 2:30 in the morning and I could smell Grandma Bessie's
vanilla perfume. I looked at the foot of my bed and there
she stood, healthy and smiling. Her hair was done up
perfect and she had her glasses on. She was wearing an
orange polyester shirt I always tried to hide from her, and
she spoke to me gesturing with her hands the way she always
did. She said, "You take care of that baby, and don't worry
about me, I am fine." I had to go the bathroom so I pushed
the button for the nurse and told grandma to hold on as I
have to go to the bathroom, and then we can talk. When the
nurse came in I went to introduce her and Grandma Bessie was
gone. I could still smell her perfume, and the nurse
couldn't figure out how I was awake after the sedative they
gave me. I stayed up the rest of the night and told my
husband the next morning he would have to attend the
memorial without me, because our daughter was going to be
born that day. I told him about Grandma Bessie visiting me
and he knew too we would be fine. Grandma's memorial was at
1:00 pm, and Amber was born that evening at 6:00 by
Cesarean; it was what Grandma wanted.
