"Tips To Help You Look & Feel Your Best"
------------------------------------------------------------
Good Morning,
I realize I haven't had any amusing stories to tell you
lately, not a lot of amusing things going on around here,
although my mom's mood has improved enoromously, and that
in itself is the most important issue for me right now...
When I talked to Flyboy, he assured me everything was
running smoothly and all the poochies are behaving
themselves...
Of course, one never knows when a man is watching the
gang. The last time he assured me everything was fine
and dandy was the time the stereo surround sound stopped
working and Ginger had the chewed up wires in her mouth...

Today, choosing a wig or hairpiece after cancer treatments...
The wigs and hairpieces of yesterday weren't too natural looking.
Today, there are many more alternatives in styles, colors, and
textures. Wigs aremade of human hair or synthetic fibers in loads
of colors to match just about anyone...
You are entitled to a free wig if you are a patient in hospital
when the wig is supplied. You can also have a free wig if you or
your partner are claiming Income Support, Family Credit, Income-
based Jobseeker's Allowance or Disability Working Allowance. The
Department of Health leaflet HC11 Are you entitled to help with
health costs? can tell you whether you are able to have a free
wig from the NHS. You can get a copy of the leaflet from your
post office or the staff at the hospital. If you are not entitled
to a free wig you can still get one from the hospital at a
subsidised rate. The procedure is explained in the Department of
Health leaflet HC12 NHS charges and optical voucher values. The
nurses on the ward can arrange for a wig-fitter to visit and help
you choose a style and colour that suits you. Most hospitals will
supply wigs to people having treatment as outpatients, but this
does not happen in all hospitals.

There are some people who choose their wig before they have
started losing their hair. This is so the wig will match
their color and style better. An advantage to this is that
should you lose your hair quicker than you thought, you will
be ready and not have to wait for orders etc.
To keep your appearance as close to what it was before you
started losing your hair...
Try to get a wig with the same volume as your own hair. If you
have thick hair before the treatments, go with a similar look.
Keep in mind you want to look as natural as you can so "less is
more" as far as having it look like a wig sitting on your head.
When in doubt, go for less hair on the wig...
Go with the same color or one shade lighter in a wig. If you go
darker, you won't look natural to those around you, or even yourself.
A little lighter will be less noticeable than a little darker...
One of the most common worries people have about wearing a wig is
how to keep it in place. There are a number of different ways of
ensuring your wig is secure. Although a well fitting wig should
stay in place on its own, you may feel happier using an additional
form of attachment. The commonest way of securing a wig is with
double-sided tape. Wig specialists stock hypoallergenic tape which
does not irritate the skin. The tape is applied to the underside of
the wig and provides a secure but comfortable bond. Surgical spirit
can be used to remove any leftover adhesive.
A human hair wig can be cut and styled to suit your needs. A
synthetic wig is pre set and is just washed and air dried. A
little hairpsray can be used on a synthetic wig, but you have
to be carefull because too much will dull it.
Have your wig properly fitted. A smaller size will probably be
needed after you lose your hair. To make sure it is a good
fitting wig, put it on, bend over and shake your head to see
if the wig moves around or falls off. If it does, then of course
it's too big.
Synthetic wigs that are worn every day can last up to 4 months.
Usually by then the elastic loosens which affects the fit. These
should always be kept away from extreme heat, such as an oven or
gas flame. They can melt and frizz...
Human hair wigs are much more expensive, but much more natural
because they can be groomed much like your regular hair, although
they should be handled gently to prevent tangling and matting.
I have mentioned this product quite a few times in the few years
I have been doing this column. The product is the Nioxin line
of shampoos and scalp treatments. This product is given to cancer
patients to use to strengthen their hair as it starts growing back
and can also help those with thinning hair. It's pricey and can
be found at hair salons and a few other places such as Ulta and
some beauty supply stores. When I worked in the salon, we used
it on quite a few cancer patients and it did help their hair and
scalp. Sally beauty supply carries a "knock-off" of the Nioxin
brand which smells and works the same at a fraction of the cost.
Nioxin does, however, carry the whole line of hair treatments
like vitamins, scalp drops etc. Great product for those who may
need it...
I hope I have helped some who may have needed some extra info
that isn't always given to them when they need it...
