Today's Topic: The Office
Office hook-ups are extremely common and with good reason.
It really does just make sense. After all, you are in the
same place with your co-workers at least 40 hours a week,
have ample time to bond through projects and at the water
cooler, and then there's the obvious that if you work
together, you have mutual interests and built-in conversation
topics. When you list all these aspects, an office romance
almost seems inevitable.
So what to do if you are attracted to a co-worker? Many,
many readers say just go for it. In fact, I read over and
over how many of you met your partners at work. Before you
jump in the office pool, though, there are several points
to ponder. Would I be Carmen if I didn't point out the
different sides?
Be professional - This should go without saying, but in the
middle of new hook-up euphoria, professionalism is often the
last thing on your mind. You might want to stop by your
paramour's office in the morning...and at ten o'clock...and
at three...but stop yourself! No making out when others are
in eyesight! No playing favorites and giving your partner
unearned accolades. You don't want what is supposed to be
your outside life to negatively impact your career. But
sometimes the boundary line is blurry. When in doubt...
Be discreet. Again, you don't want to make your relation-
ship so obvious that you become immediate fodder for the
gossip mill. You don't want people talking about your couple-
dom; you want them to talk about your work performance. If
the dalliance turns into a full-blown relationship, consult
your Human Resources manual to see if there is a company
policy against office dating. In some cases, you might
have to disclose the relationship to your HR rep.
Especially if said relationship is with your boss (or vice
versa). Tread even more cautiously here, folks. Make wise
decisions. Truthfully, the relationship could work out in
the long-term, but what if it doesn't? Consider how you
would handle a breakup and how it might affect your job.
Even in a good relationship, things can become strained when
one person gives the other orders all day, is in charge of
promotions, etc. Consider all aspects.

I'm done with the doom and gloom part of the show. If you've
