                      LORETTA SWIT

BIRTH DATE: November 4, 1937, Passaic, New Jersey

CLAIM TO FAME: To be honest the only role I know Loretta
Swit from is that of the character of Major Margaret "Hot
Lips" Houlihan in the television series M*A*S*H.

She inherited the role from Sally Kellerman, who portrayed
the character in the feature film.

FAMILY LIFE: Dennis Holahan (Dec 1983 - 1995) Divorced
No children

INFO: Her mother objected when Loretta Swit decided to go
into acting, and Swit objected when well-meaning agents
suggested she get a nose job and a more "normal" last name.
She was 30 before acting paid the rent, and 35 before
M*A*S*H debuted.

TRIVIA: During a "M*A*S*H" season hiatus, Loretta starred
as Chris Cagney in the pilot episode of "Cagney and Lacey"
in 1981. She wanted to leave the show, which was in its
ninth season, to star as the police officer when the pilot
was picked up. The "M*A*S*H" producers, however, wouldn't
let her go. Meg Foster subbed in for Loretta, who in turn
was replaced by Sharon Gless.

Wrote a book on needlepoint.

Loretta and Alan Alda were the only two actors to have been
on the pilot episode and the finale.

She did not appear in 11 out of the total of 251 episodes.

She received two Emmy Awards for her work on M*A*S*H

She was the first cast member of "M*A*S*H" to actually
visit Korea when she narrated the documentary "Korea,
the Forgotten War."

Her outspoken stand against the killing of fur-bearing
animals for high-fashion wear has been rewarded with
acknowledgments from the American Humane Society and the
Animal Protection Institute of America. In addition, she
teamed with Robert Redford for a PBS special centering on
animal species that were threatened with extinction and is
an active board member for Actors and Others for Animals,
and other similar organizations.

Is vegan.

WHERE IS SHE NOW: After M*A*S*H Loretta continued to act.
In fact she was very busy. She really hasn't been in any-
thing since 1998. Instead she has devoted herself to

the well being of animals.

In fact she is donating much of her time to all sorts of
animal-related causes. Over the years she has owned horses,
dogs and cats. Presently, she owns three cats and a horse.

You may remember Loretta had a wildlife series, "Those
Incredible Animals". It was originally shown on The Discovery
Channel and had an amazing five-year run. Now you can catch
re-runs on Animal Planet and it continues to air in over 30

She also has her own line of jewelry which she has sold at
jewelry shows across the nation.
