TIP O' THE WEEK
----------------

Timing Tips:

* Fly an early bird

It's best to book flights departing earlier in the day. That
lets you get ahead of the ripple effect created by delays at
other airports and gets you out before prime thunderstorm
conditions arrive in the sun-baked afternoon.

Getting out early also gives you more re-routing options if
your flight is canceled.

* Sleep in when going west

You might want to aim for later in the morning when flying
to West Coast destinations like San Francisco, Los Angeles
and Seattle, where dense fog early in the day can cause
delays.

* Avoid the last flight out

The later your flight, the fewer your re-routing options are
and the greater the chances that you will be stranded
somewhere overnight. Somewhere like, oh I don‘t know,
Queens?

* Think small

Consider smaller, secondary airports. Delays are often less
at Baltimore/Washington than at Washington Reagan National.
Or fly into and out of Burbank or Orange County instead of
Los Angeles International Airport. Oakland instead of San
Francisco International. Providence rather than Boston's
Logan. You get the drift.

* Get a paper ticket.

Airlines want you to fly on electronic tickets to save
costs. But if you need to be transferred to another airline,
you'll save time if you have a paper ticket that can easily
be "endorsed" over to another carrier. Until computers on
competing airlines can "talk" to each other, e-tickets are a
sizeable speed bump when it comes to changing carriers.

* Avoid the end of the month

This is when delays tend to be a little more frequent. Why?
According to Brancatelli, the Big Six will be required to
cancel flights because the cascading delays will eat up the
crews' federally mandated maximum monthly duty times and no
back-up personnel will be available.

* Go non-stop

 If you go straight to your final destination, you don't
have to worry about missing a connecting flight. Plus, the
more aircraft and arrivals and departures you put into a
travel schedule, the more likely you are that the gods of
flight delays are going to mess with you.
