Question:
I have read a good number of articles about SAD and can
certainly sympathize with the SAD-afflicted in winter.
On the other hand, there are also people – like me – who
get SAD under circumstances other than the gloom of winter.
I get very depressed and cranky in the summer when it’s
over 80-85 degrees, and humid. I can hardly move; I don’t
think clearly, nor am I pleasant to be around! I just
can’t get motivated, or work well, or finish tasks. People
I know love this weather and go hiking, play tennis, jog,
etc. etc. Not me. I feel like a slug. I just want to
sleep.
A doctor once told me that people with low blood pressure
do not perform well in hot, humid climates. My blood
pressure is enviably low. The doctor advised me to eat
salty foods (that’s a plus, anyway!) in summertime.
As far as winter is concerned, I love it – I love the snap
of cold; I love walking in the snowy woods; I get energized
and feel creative and alive. The darkness makes me
appreciate the coziness of warm interiors, with candles,
fires in the fireplace, and I enjoy socializing more.
Isn’t it interesting how varied our reactions are, to
differing conditions!
Answer:
It's important to know our own bodies so that we can
adapt to the seasons in a way that is best fit for us.
Thanks for offering a different perspective and some
helpful hints for those who, like you, have an aversion
to the summer months. How nice to hear the darkness and
cold described in such a positive light!

Question:
After reading your article on SAD, I think that may be
the cause of my winter woes. I'm always feeling lethargic
and unmotivated during the winter, whereas I'm out and
about, smiling and laughing, during the sunny, warm
months. I didn't know there was actually a name for this!
I'm very interested in trying out a light box. I can pur-
chase a garden light, but how exactly do I use it? How
long do I shine it on me for? How long? Thanks so much
for your helpful advice!
Answer:
A website that has more information about SAD and
specializes in light therapy is
http://www.lighttherapyproducts.com. If you click on
the INFORMATION tab, you will find much more about SAD
and exactly how to implement light therapy. I hope this
proves to be a great solution for your winter woes!

Question:
Valentine's Day is coming up and I would love some ideas
as to a great vacation spot to take my 68-year-old wife.
She's in good health, but neither of us have the energy
to do a lot of hiking or foot travel. Where do you suggest
we go for a relaxing, romantic and unique experience?
Answer:
You don't say whether you would like somewhere you can
drive to or if you'd prefer to fly, but I can make a
general suggestion. Spas make excellent destinations
for those who want to relax, as well as be enlightened.
Not only will you feel pampered, but many spas offer
classes or lectures on all sorts of subjects of interest
to guests. Everything is catered to you, and without the
hustle-bustle of a city, you have more time to focus on
yourself and in your case, your wife.
Readers, what are some other ideas for a romantic, unique
vacation? Where have you been that you are itching to
return to? Where have you always wanted to go?
