On May 28, 1588 the Spanish Armada, with 130 ships and 30,000 
men, begins to set sail from Lisbon heading for the English 

In 1905 The Battle of Tsushima ends with the destruction of 
the Russian Baltic Fleet by Admiral Togo Heihachiro and the 
Imperial Japanese Navy. 

Belgium surrenders to Germany on this day in 1940 during 
World War II. 

In 1982 British forces defeat the Argentines at the Battle 
of Goose Green during the Falklands War. 

And in 1998 Pakistan responds to a series of Indian nuclear 
tests with five of its own, prompting the United States, 
Japan, and other nations to impose economic sanctions.

Following its coverage of the women's semi-finals match 
between Steffi Graf and Lori McNeil at the 1987 U.S. Open, 
CBS displayed a blank screen for six minutes when Dan 
Rather walked out of the studio, disturbed that the long 
match had pushed back the start of the evening news. 


Benjamin Franklin drew one of the first cartoons in the 
American colonies. His cartoon, intended to urge the col-
onies to unite against the French and Indians, showed 
each colony as a part of a snake, with the caption, "Join, 
or die." Considered the first American political cartoon, 
it was printed in The Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. 


Following Chicago's 1886 Haymarket Riot in which ten 
people were killed by a bomb, the police charged eight 
labor leaders--none of whom was present at the time of 
the bombing--with aiding an unknown person to commit 
murder. Although no evidence linked the leaders with 
the incident, seven of them were sentenced to death and 
four were hanged. The remaining leaders were pardoned 
by the governor of Illinois in 1893.
