Smooth smoothies. Even Starbucks is jumping on the 
smoothie bandwagon these days with new yummy sounding
drinks which you can opt to add various protein and
other healthy powders to...for an extra fee of course.
My sister got me hooked on the Jamba Juice chain and
they finally built one out our way. Well I've heard
the Starbucks were good so I'll surely have to try one.
Here's a yummy one you can do on your own and if you've
got a blender you never use this is an excellent reason
to dust it off and keep nearby. Pineapple Strawberrie
Banana Smoothie gets all the goodies in there but feel
free to experiment with others. Fresh is best when 
making these fruit smoothies.

RECIPE: PINE-STRAW-BANANA SMOOTHIE

INGREDIENTS:
3 cups freshly squeezed orange juice
2 cups fresh pineapple chunks 1-inch
2 cups fresh strawberries
2 cups banana chunks 2-inch
2 to 3 packages Equal brand sweetener, Splenda or 
other - optional

DIRECTIONS:
Place fruit on baking sheets, cover with plastic 
wrap, and freeze until solid, apx 1 hr. This can be
done well in advance. (I like to have frozen fruit on
hand in freezer bags. After the fruit has frozen you
can put it in a freezer bag or plastic  covered container.
The fruit has to be frozen in separate pieces on a baking
sheet before you put it into a container or it will stick
together in a big lump. Place juice, fruit and sweetener
if using in blender or food processor and process until
smooth (If fruit is too hard to process, allow it to
soften for 1 or 2 minutes before continuing.) Best if
served immediately but can be covered and chilled for
up to 60 minutes before serving.

How can I lower the fat content of my smoothies?

There are lots of small substitutions you can make to
lower the fat content of your smoothies. Use skim or
soy milk instead of regular milk, or frozen yogurt
instead of ice cream. Add nutrition with some wheat
germ or protein powder. You can also reduce calories
by avoiding sweetened frozen fruit. Use fresh fruit
instead.

My smoothies come out thin, how can I make them thicker?

Experiment with flavored ice cubes. This is a great way
to create a cool and thick smoothie, full of concentrated
flavor. To make, simply pour the juice, tea, or nectar
of your preference into an ice cube tray and freeze. For
a thick, dense smoothie, add an extra handful of frozen
fruit, crushed ice, or frozen yogurt or sorbet.

My blender locks up when I try to make my smoothie,
what am I doing wrong?

To prevent blender lock-up add the liquid to the blender
first, and then blend for one second after adding each
remaining ingredient, until all ingredients are added.
