Grossman to start in place of injured Griese

Rex Grossman has his job back as the starting quarterback
of the Chicago Bears, replacing injured Brian Griese for
Sunday's game at Seattle. Bears coach Lovie Smith made the
announcement Wednesday and his choice of Grossman was
apparently not based solely on Griese's sprained shoulder.
"We're going to go with who gives us the best opportunity
to win," Smith said. Grossman said he hopes to be the starter
for the remainder of the season. "I'm trying to keep this
job for the rest of the season, I think that's a given.
I've already been benched, what are they going to do to me?
I've been there and I don't want to go back," Grossman said.
"I'm just excited about going out and playing football and
not worrying about the repercussions of it." Griese took
over for the struggling Grossman after the third game this
season, but sprained his left shoulder when he was hit late
in the first half of the Bears' game against Oakland on

NFL reinstates Ricky Williams; Dolphins to give RB physical

Ricky Williams' suspension ended after more than 18 months
Wednesday when he was reinstated by the NFL, and the winless
Miami Dolphins may welcome him back. The 2002 league rushing
champion was scheduled to fly to South Florida for a physical
Thursday and meet with coach Cam Cameron, said Williams' agent,
Leigh Steinberg. The first-year Miami coach, whose team is 0-9,
has given no indication publicly he wants Williams. But
Steinberg said he was encouraged by a phone conversation
Wednesday with Matt Thomas, Dolphins general counsel-football
administration. "His indication was they were interested in
Ricky," Steinberg said. "The spirit of the discussion was
welcoming. It was a very similar discussion to what you would
have regarding a draft choice or any returning player. The only
contingent was whether they would have him practice Friday or
Monday." The Dolphins offered no immediate comment on Williams'
reinstatement. His return would be only part of backfield
shakeup -- rookie quarterback John Beck was promoted to the
first team Wednesday and will make his NFL debut Sunday at
Philadelphia. The 30-year-old Williams, who has played in
only 12 games since the start of the 2004 season, was
suspended in April 2006 after violating the league drug
policy for the fourth time. His return was delayed when he
tested positive again for marijuana last spring. He played in
the Canadian Football League last season and applied for
reinstatement Oct. 1.

Browns sign offensive lineman Greg Eslinger

The Cleveland Browns signed center Greg Eslinger on Wednesday
for added depth to an offensive line that lost starting guard
Seth McKinney to a season-ending shoulder injury last week.
Eslinger spent the season's first 10 weeks on Denver's practice
squad. McKinney was placed on injured reserve after getting
hurt in Cleveland's Nov. 4 win over Seattle. A sixth-round
draft pick in 2006 by the Broncos, Eslinger spent last season
on injured reserve. He sustained a shoulder injury during
training camp that year.

'Skins WR Lloyd out at least six weeks with broken collarbone

Washington Redskins receiver Brandon Lloyd broke his collarbone
Wednesday and will be sidelined at least six weeks, the latest
setback in his disappointing tenure in the nation's capital.
Coach Joe Gibbs said Lloyd was hurt on the last play of practice
when he caught a ball in the end zone. There was no other player
involved. "He landed on his shoulder and drove his shoulder
into the ground," trainer Bubba Tyer said. The force of the
landing caused a complete break of the clavicle. Lloyd's right
shoulder was put in a sling, but he will not require surgery.
Lloyd has caught only two passes for 14 yards this season,
having fallen out of favor with the coaches because of his
work ethic and lack of productivity. He missed a team meeting
two weeks ago and, as punishment, wasn't allowed to travel with
the team for the following game against the New York Jets.
The Redskins traded two draft picks to San Francisco for Lloyd
last year and signed him to a long-term contract that included
$10 million in guaranteed money. He caught only 23 passes for
365 yards last season and lost his starting job to Antwaan
Randle El in December. However, this could have been the very
week Lloyd had a chance to redeem himself. Santana Moss is
struggling with a bruised right heel that caused him to miss
last week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and James
Thrash was on crutches Wednesday because of a severely sprained
ankle. Thrash is unlikely to play in Sunday's game against the
NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys, and Moss' situation doesn't look
much better. Moss didn't even bother trying to put his right
shoe on completely as he left the locker room before Wednesday's
walkthrough. "We're working like crazy to get the swelling out
of his heel so we can get him back on the field," Tyer said.
With seven games to go in the regular season, the Redskins
will have to decide whether to place Lloyd on injured reserve
and sign another receiver. Coincidentally, the team added
receiver Burl Toler to the practice squad Wednesday, replacing
offensive lineman Calvin Armstrong.
