Question:

I wholeheartedly agree that 60 is the new 45. Most 60-70
somethings are the backbone of volunteer organizations
today. They are performing the functions that stay-at-home
moms performed before they all went back to work. It's
wonderful to see grandparents who are grandparents to their
own grandchildren and to many others as well. To see candy
stripers at the hospital providing love and compassion to
the sick of all ages is a beautiful sight. They are indeed,
giving of their time and substance most generously...and
enjoying every minute of it.

Answer:

I've always advocated volunteering as a way for us sages
to give back to the community, as well as to keep active
and avoid traditional "retirement." Volunteering is also
a wonderful way to meet other like-minded individuals
and form NEW community later in life.

Question:

I always find it funny when I hear people talk about
something being the "new" something else. Why can't 60
just be the new 60?? We need to stop associating youthful
attitudes and actions with being a certain (younger) age
and recognize that being 60 or 70 or 80 is great in its
own right without having to compare it to being 45! I
know medicine has helped people live longer, but I would
venture to guess that even a few decades ago, there were
people in their 60s and beyond who were already doing
great things. In fact I know there were - my own parents!

Answer:

You are absolutely right that there were many people
living full and active lives at age 60 and beyond long
before the media caught up with the buzz! Perhaps a more
accurate headline would have been "60: It's always been
around, but we just used to focus only on 45"!

The following joke lends itself very well to this dis-
cussion. Hope you have a laugh!

Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's
house they went for Grandma's birthday. When they
arrived little Johnny said to Grandma, "Happy Birthday"
and then proceeded to ask her how old she was.

Grandma immediately answered, "I'm 39 and holding."

To that, little Johnny asked, "Okay so hold old would
you be if you let go?"
