NFL backs Colts on allegations noise was piped into RCA Dome

The Indianapolis Colts contend the debate about the decibel
level in the RCA Dome is merely noise, and now they have the
NFL taking their side. A day after some unusual sounds were
heard during the Colts-Patriots broadcast Sunday, the NFL
issued a statement saying what sounded like simulated crowd
noise was actually created by the CBS production crew, not
the Colts. "CBS has informed us that the unusual audio moment
heard by fans during the Patriots-Colts game was the result
of tape feedback in the CBS production truck and was isolated
to the CBS broadcast," the league said. "It was in no way
related to any sound within the stadium and could not be heard
in the stadium." Network officials did not give any additional
details, referring only to the league's statement. The tele-
cast received the highest rating overnight rating, 22.5, of
any Sunday afternoon regular-season NFL game since at least
1987 and had a 39 share nationally.

Carr's concussion latest QB injury for hurting Panthers

Another game, another injury to a Carolina Panthers quarter-
back. Coach John Fox said Monday that David Carr sustained
a concussion late in Sunday's loss to Tennessee and his
status for next week's game against Atlanta is uncertain.
"He's still be evaluated," Fox said. "We'll keep you posted."
Fox also said center Justin Hartwig (broken right thumb),
receiver Steve Smith (hip) and defensive end Julius Peppers
(toe) were injured against the Titans. None has been ruled
out of the Atlanta game. But the biggest concern for Fox is
Carolina's endless troubles at QB. With Carr and Vinny
Testaverde (Achilles' tendon) banged up and original starter
Jake Delhomme (elbow) out for the season, undrafted rookie
Matt Moore is the only healthy QB. It could force Carolina
to sign yet another quarterback this week.

Lee Agrees to $12 Million Extension with Packers

Packers tight end Donald Lee signed a four-year extension
worth just under $12 million, his agent said Monday. "He
is really excited about the deal," agent Brian Levy said.
Packers general manager Ted Thompson did not immediately
return a call seeking comment. Lee, who has 29 receptions
for 382 yards and a touchdown, has become an integral part
of the Packers' offense this season with fellow tight end
Bubba Franks out with a knee injury. Lee received a raise
from his current salary of just over $1.4 million, meaning
the bonus on his new deal was $3 million, Levy said.
