--DESTINATION: Sensational Sunsets

Cabo's brilliant sunsets are best viewed from the
Pacific side of Baja's tip. The Finisterra's Whale
Watcher Bar and the Solmar's palapa (palm thatch)
bar have long been favorite perches for ocean lovers
any time of day. As gold and rose tint the sky, all
eyes turn westward to the long, nearly empty beach
and the endless expanse of natural scenery. Most
sunset cruise boats glide past the land-bound on-
lookers. If you want to be part of the scenery,
board the Pirate Cruise or La Princesa. On the Sea
of Cortez side of the tip, El Arco, Cabo's famous
Arch, stands out against the sunset's glow. Claim
one of the cliff-top tables at Ristorante Sunset Da
Mona Lisa Italian Restaurant for spectacular pano-
ramas, or join the revelers praising the fading light
at one of Playa Médano's beach bars. One of the best
ways to enjoy the sunset in San José del Cabo is to
go horseback riding on the beach. This can be
arranged at most of the hotels.

Bahía Chileno

Beaches, The Corridor

A private enclave -- with golf courses and residences
-- is being developed at Bahía Chileno, roughly midway
between San José and San Lucas. The beach skirts a
small, crescent-shape cove with aquamarine waters that
are perfect for snorkeling and swimming. At this writ-
ing, the dirt access road and parking lot were open,
but time will tell how the developers will handle
public access -- required by law -- to the bay. Ideal
for swimming and snorkeling, this pretty Corridor beach
skirts a small, crescent-shape cove with aquamarine
water. On the western end stands a rocky cliff where
the Hotel Cabo San Lucas is perched. Along the eastern
edge, some 200 yards away, are boulders you can climb.
On the trek down you may see some stray wrappers and
cans, but the beach itself is clean and usually not
too crowded. During winter, this part of the Sea of
Cortez gets chilly -- refreshing for a dip, but most
snorkelers cut their swims short.

Casa de la Cultura
Historic Districts / Sites, San José del Cabo

During the 1847 War of Intervention, this simple
terra-cotta-color building served as a refuge for
a company of American sailors. It now occasionally
hosts theater, music, and dance performances.

Other Places of Interest:

El Faro de Cabo Falso
Nautical Sites, Cabo San Lucas

The abandoned shell of a lighthouse built in 1890
sits amid sand dunes, some more than 500 feet high,
and overlooks the cape and a 1912 shipwreck. To
reach the lighthouse by land, you need an ATV, a
four-wheel-drive vehicle, or a horse. A dirt road
slightly north of San Lucas, off Highway 19, leads
to the lighthouse and a secluded beach where turtles
come ashore to lay their eggs.

Iglesia Santa Barbara
Religious Sites, Santa Rosalia

Santa Rosalia is known for its Iglesia Santa Barbara,
a prefabricated iron church designed by Alexandre-
Gustave Eiffel, creator of the Eiffel Tower. The iron
panels of the little church are brightened by stained-
glass windows.

Best Western Posada Real
$$$, San José del Cabo

One of the best values in the hotel zone, this beach-
side property consists of two tri-level, Santa Fe-style
buildings. Every room has a balcony and at least a
partial ocean view, a bathtub and shower, and a re-
frigerator. The large heated pool has a palapa-roof
swim-up bar. The hotel is quiet compared to its all-
inclusive neighbors and frequently draws business

Cabo Inn
$, Cabo San Lucas

The small, comfortable rooms at this palapa-roof
hotel have tangerine and cobalt sponge-painted walls
and stained-glass windows above the headboards. The
eight rooms on the lower level have refrigerators; a
kitchen, barbecue and picnic area, small pool, and a
television round out the communal amenities.

Casa Bella
$$-$$$, Cabo San Lucas

The Ungson family had been in Cabo for more than four
decades before turning their home across from Plaza
San Lucas into an inn. It's the classiest place in
the neighborhood, landscaped with paths leading to a
pool and terrace. Room furnishings are handcrafted
and thoughtfully arranged. Open showers in the huge
tiled bathrooms are works of art -- some even have
little gardens. The property feels totally secluded,
though it's in the middle of town.

Casa del Mar Beach, Golf & Spa Resort
$$$$, The Corridor
User Rating: ***** 4.6

It's all about comfort and privacy at this hacienda-
style hotel. A hand-carved door leads into the court-
yard-lobby, and stairways curve up to the rooms, spa,
and library. Guest quarters have bathrooms with whirl-
pool bathtubs a few steps above the main bedroom. A
series of streams, fountains, and gardens leads around
the pool to a wide stretch of beach and a beach club

Absolutely excellent

We just returned from 5 nights at Casa del Mar and
we're dying to go back. The grounds and facilities
are beautiful, and it all feels very secluded and
private. Falling asleep to the sound of the ocean
was amazing. Food is so-so...breakfast and lunch
were consistently excellent, the beach BBQ dinner
featured overcooked fish. ROOM: 5.0ATMOSPHERE:

Baan Thai
$-$$, Thai, San José del Cabo
User Rating: ***** 5.0

The aromas alone are enough to bring you through
the door, where you're then greeted with visual
and culinary delights. The formal dining room has
Asian antiques, and a fountain murmurs on a patio.
The chef blends Asian spices with aplomb, creating
sublime pad thai, lamb curry, and the catch of the
day with lemon black-bean sauce. Prices are reason-
able for such memorable food.

Café Olé
¢-$, Mexican, Loreto

Locals and gringos hang out here for terrific break-
fasts of scrambled eggs with chorizo (sausage) and
huevos rancheros. It also serves good burgers, ice
cream, and french fries.

Famed Chicago chef Charlie Trotter is behind this
restaurant in the One&Only Palmilla resort. Cylin-
drical aquariums separate the open kitchen from
the dining room. An open-air bar has seating areas
overlooking the rocky coast. Trotter's menu
emphasizes vegetables -- salsify, wax beans, turnips
-- and pairs short ribs with parsnips and beets or
rabbit with a sweet chili sauce. There's an awesome
chocolate soufflé for dessert. The menu changes
