           LIVING GREEN - Thursday, July 24, 2008
-----------------------------------------------------------

Good morning,

Yesterday we talked about Bee Colony Collapse Disorder and
the threat it poses to U.S. food production.

While the cause of Colony Collapse Disorder hasn't been
pinpointed as yet, it's thought to be a result of parasites
taking advantage of warmer, more humid conditions in some
areas and possibly the effects of pesticides.

As huge as the problem is, there are a couple things we can
do as individuals. Scroll down for some steps you can take
at home.

Thanks for reading,

We can all do our part by making our yards attractive to
non-commercially kept bees; by planting flowers; or better
still, a vegetable garden and most importantly - using
less pesticides in our own gardens.

"Wild" honeybees may be all that's left soon, and in small
numbers - where they haven't been affected by colony
collapse disorder or have perhaps developed some sort of
immunity to whatever causes CCD, they may be the popu-
lations that help save the species - and some of those may
be visiting your yard.

And, of course, it is always a good idea to talk about the
proplem. You might be surprised how many people don't even
know this is going on. And while talking to people is a
good idea writing a letter to government representatives is
a better one.
