My wife and I were out for a walk when she noticed a strange
sign in a yard a few blocks from our house. It read, "Beware
of Children".
We hoped it was a joke, but to be honest, we didn't stick
around long to find out.

WEBMASTER TIP - Reversed Scroll Bar
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs.
If you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it
won't work.
Question: I stumbled upon a web page with the scroll bars
on the wrong side of the page! How'd they do that?
Simon Says: The CSS code below will change the scroll bar
from its usual position on the right side of the browser
window to the left side. To get started, place the following
code inside the HEAD section of your page:
<.style type="text/css">
body {direction: rtl;}
div.main {align: left; direction: ltr;}

The body {direction: rtl;} changes the page orientation from
the default left-to-right, to a right-to-left orientation.
This is what moves the scroll bar from the right side of the
browser window to the left, but it also changes the text
orientation so that text on a page like this would align to
the right.
Having a reversed text orientation means the text would align
straight on a vertical line on the right side of the page,
with a ragged left edge. This usually isn't desirable, so
I've included a division tag that re-aligns the text in the
usual left-to-right fashion. Simply include your entire page
within a division tag with the main class as I show below to
have the scroll bar on the left side and text that aligns as
it normally does. Of course, if you do want the text to be
ragged left you can simply leave the division out of the code.
Here's the complete code for page like this one.

<.title>Page Title
<.style type="text/css">
body {direction: rtl;}
div.main {align: left; direction: ltr;}
<.div class="main">

This trick works in IE 5.5 and higher. I'm not sure if it
will work in other browsers.

COMPUTER TIPS - Clearing IE's AutoComplete Entries
After a while, your IE AutoComplete entries become filled
with outdated information. AutoComplete is when you start
typing an email address, password, login name, or other
text information into a form field, and Internet Explorer
remembers what you've typed before and enters the text
automatically for you.
Sometimes the AutoComplete needs to be cleaned out to get
rid of old, outdated entries. If you want to clear all the
entries just follow these simple steps:
1) Start Internet Explorer.
2) Click Tools/Internet Options.
3) Click the Content tab.
4) Click the AutoComplete button.
5) Click on the Clear Forms button.
6) Close out the Internet Options dialog.
If you don't like AutoComplete you can disable it, or disable
specific form fields by unchecking the boxes that apply. If
your computer doesn't AutoComplete but you'd like it to, just
follow the directions above and check the boxes that apply.
WARNING! Make sure you have the login and password information
you need for access to your web hosting account, memberships
in online sites, and other areas before clearing the
AutoComplete entries. Once they're gone, they're gone!
Disclaimer: Advice in this column is presented as informational
and is true to the best of my knowledge. Any decisions to follow
this advice is your responsibility. Your computer, your choice.

Until next week, remember these words of Bill Copeland: When
you stretch the truth, watch out for the snapback.
Have an interesting day, Simon
