A lot of funny things happen in public if you just pay attention.
I was in my favorite diner last week when I overheard a couple
decide to split a piece of pie. When the pie came, the man cut
it into two pieces, one obviously larger than the other, and
then he slid the smaller piece to his companion.
The woman slid the small piece back to the man and took the large
piece for herself. The man asked her what she was doing, and she
replied that she was trading "halves." He protested that the
piece he tried to keep for himself was bigger.
"I know," she said, "but you divided the pie so I get to pick
which piece I want. If you want a bigger piece next time, cut
the pie more fairly."
He didn't say a word after that and I presume she enjoyed her
pie much more than he did.

WEBMASTER TIP - Backgrounds Everywhere
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
Question: Is it possible to put a background behind text without
putting the text in a table? Someone told me you could do this
now but didn't know how it was done.
Simon Says: Someone told you right, and now you can tell them how
it's done! You can add a background image or color to many HTML
elements using CSS. I can't list all the places, so just give it
a try where you want the background to appear. It won't hurt any-
thing if it don't work and the process of experimentation and
discovery is great fun.
To add a background color add this inline CSS to an element:
 style="background: #A9C7AF; width: 170px;"
For example, if you wanted to add a background color to a heading
tag, the whole thing would look like this:
<.h5 style="background: #A9C7AF;">Heading Text<./h5>
To add a background image, add this inline CSS to an element:
 style="background-image: url('bg.jpg');"

Change "bg.jpg" to the name and image format of the background
image you want to use, and include the path the to image if it
isn't in the same directory. To place a background image behind
a paragraph:
<.p style="background-image: url('images/bg.jpg');
width: 170px;">Paragraph Text<./p>
In the above example I added "images/" in front of the background
image. This reflects the path to the image if the image is in a
directory called "images" instead of in the same directory as
the HTML page. I also added a width the paragraph, just remove
that if you don't need to set the width.

SURFIN' THE WEB - Micro Images Blog
Picture a grain of sand in your mind. Do you imagine it as a
very small, very smooth object? Wrong! When you see a grain
of sand magnified 50 times it's anything but smooth.
The Micro Images Blog shows off magnified images of various
objects using a handheld microscope called the ProScope HR.
When you see a yellowjacket's head magnified 1000 times, or
a wasp's stinger magnified 50 times, you'll be even more
inclined to stay away from them. Even something as harmless
as a plant leaf looks pretty weird when you can see what your
eyes normally can't see.

Life is stranger than you think, and this site proves it. Hint:

Computer peripherals don't last forever, especially cheap ones!
Keyboards and mice seem to wear out at the most inopportune
times and you certainly need them to operate your computer.
They're also very cheap to purchase, so why not keep a spare
keyboard and mouse on-hand for those times when one of them
dies and goes to that big silicon valley in the sky?
You don't need a top of the line keyboard or mouse for your
spare. You can get a cheap keyboard and mouse for under $20
if you shop around, and sometimes quite a bit less if you
watch for sales or buy used ones. At our local college they
open the doors to the public every Friday to sell off old
equipment they no longer have use for. They always seem to
have used keyboards there for $2.00 - $5.00.
That's pretty cheap insurance against having one of these parts
give out at a time when you need it and the stores aren't open
or you don't really have the time to spare to go shopping. With
a spare on hand, you can keep working and buy a good one when
it's a convenient time for you, and place the spare back into
storage for the next time.

and is true to the best of my knowledge. Any decisions to follow
this advice is your responsibility. Your computer, your choice.

Until next week, ponder these words of Don Wilder: Excuses are
the nails used to build a house of failure.
Have an interesting day, Simon
