Acts of Kindness
Zsuzsana, I first thought not to send this for fear of
bragging, but since you requested it, here goes. A few years
back, I was still in the work force (I have been retired
about 10 years since this took place). I was working two
full time jobs trying to prepare myself for retirement.
Well, the story goes like this. My oldest daughter asked me
if I remembered a certain little girl that used to baby sit
for me. I said, "Yes, how could I forget her?" Well, she
went on to say this girl and her husband were straining to
get by and she needed a few groceries. The husband was out
of work; he was attempting to get by preaching but didn't
have a congregation yet. I don't know what they believe but
that didn't matter, so I said, "Well, I'll give you a check
for them," so I sat down and wrote a blank check to them and
since I didn't specify the amount, my daughter asked how
much? I thought for a minute and I said to try to keep it
down to a hundred, as I knew it would be good for that
amount with me bringing home two paychecks every two weeks.
My daughter took the girl grocery shopping and with
everything she wanted, my daughter would pull extra off the
shelf and put in her basket, both meat and veggies. Finally
the girl asked how much could they spend and my daughter
replied, "Daddy said I could go carte blanche." I had told
her to get what they needed for I remembered once I had
asked a friend to help me and he had handed me a $20 bill,
saying "Would this help?" I was suddenly tearful but
replied, "Yes, it sure would," but I didn't need that much.
He insisted though that I go buy food for my family. I had 5
children then.
Well, on this shopping trip the girls spent $80 or $90, I
don't remember which, but I was so happy afterwards. It was
then that I learned what it meant, "It is better to give
than to receive." Even now when I think about it, it makes
me feel good inside. All I can say now is Jesus has been so
good to me where I worship. We have had many miracles
performed; I've seen cancer healed, and he has healed my
body many times. This year I've had my 3rd stroke and
recently I have had corrective surgery; I had a hernia
re-repaired (the VA refused to help me saying it wasn't
necessary but our family doctor found me a surgeon that
would do it and it was the most painless surgery I've ever
had). See I am now 77 years old and this little girl wasn't
quite a teen when she helped me out back in Texas.
