Good Christmas shopping in New York

NEW YORK, Dec. -- New York was reportedly home to some of
the best shopping deals this holiday season, with shoppers
finding bargains even on Christmas Day. The sound of cash
registers ringing in Manhattan was likened to the sound of
jingle bells ringing by the New York Daily News. The Daily
News said that even on Christmas Day the city that never
sleeps was wide-awake and ready for shopping in stores
ranging from drugstores like Duane Reade to specialty bou-
tiques like Emporio Armani. The customers were welcomed by
businesses that were hoping for a strong close to a holi-
day shopping season that was a bit lacking in luster. Anal-
ysts have predicted that sales for this holiday will be up
less than 5 percent nationally, although Friday and Satur-
day saw an estimated $16.2 billion in sales. "These were
big days but they came up short in terms of traffic and
sales," Bill Martin of the research firm ShopperTrak RCT
Corp, told the Daily News. Most major department stores
opened early Tuesday morning to promote after-Christmas
sales.
