NFL hearing union's appeal on behalf of Titans cornerback
The NFL will hear the appeal by the players' union on behalf
of suspended Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones by telephone
on Friday afternoon. A person familiar with details of Jones'
appeal told The Associated Press of the hearing, but requested
anonymity because the scheduling has not been officially announced.
Commissioner Roger Goodell declined to ease Jones' season-long
suspension Nov. 6, and the NFL Players' Association appealed that
decision a couple days later. But the union's appeal has been
limited because Jones dropped his own appeal in June.
The NFL declined to comment when asked if the appeal would be
heard Friday. Union officials did not return several messages
from The Associated Press. They realize their appeal has little
chance of success, especially with the hearing coming with only
two weeks left in the 2007 season. The appeal was first reported
by The Tennessean in its Thursday editions. Jones' status in the
NFL will be reviewed by league officials once the Titans' season
ends. The Titans (7-6) remain in contention for their first playoff
berth since 2003. Goodell suspended the sixth pick overall in the
2005 draft for the 2007 season in April, a move that followed
Jones being tabbed by Las Vegas police for inciting a strip club
fight that led to a triple shooting Feb. 19, leaving one man
paralyzed. Jones has been arrested six times since being drafted,
including two arrests in Georgia in 2006 that the Titans did not
learn about until 2007. He reached a plea deal last month in
Las Vegas, settling two felony counts of coercion into a gross
misdemeanor. Also Thursday night, Jones told a high school football
banquet in Nashville that he's "made a whole lot of bad decisions."
Addressing the Whites Creek players, he said trouble "is easy to
get into, hard to get out of." "I loved to enjoy myself," Jones
said. "I came from $10 in the bank to $15 million in the bank.
The hardest thing for me to do was turn my back on my friends.
At the end of the day, I learned things the hard way."
Roethlisberger sits out practice; Batch fills in
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger missed
practice again Thursday because of a sore right shoulder, with
Charlie Batch running the starting offense in his place.
On Tuesday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger's
problem wasn't a major one and, "I don't want to make more out
of it than what it is." The Steelers haven't updated
Roethlisberger's condition since then. Tomlin said
Roethlisberger's status would be updated Friday. It is common
for Steelers players who have relatively minor injuries to miss
a day or two of practice, then take part in the final practice
of the week Friday and play on Sunday. Batch hasn't started a
game since the 2006 opener, when he threw three touchdown
passes in a 28-17 victory over Miami. Roethlisberger, who
missed that game after having appendicitis, has started each
of the Steelers' 28 games since then.

Redskins G Thomas done for season with arm injury
Washington Redskins right guard Randy Thomas will not play
again this season because of his ailing left arm. Thomas
missed 10 games with a torn triceps and didn't make it past
the first quarter when he tried to return in last week's game
against Chicago. He hoped to continue to play as the Redskins
made a push for the playoffs, but he continued to have swelling
in the arm. Thomas will have an MRI to determine if there has
been any further damage. Thomas was placed on injured reserve
Thursday following a meeting with coach Joe Gibbs. "Me and Gibbs
figured it was pretty obvious not to be foolish with the
situation," Thomas said, "and to look forward to another
year." Thomas was injured in Week 2 against Philadelphia. His
spot has been filled by 10-year veteran Jason Fabini, one of
several upheavals in an injury-plagued season for the offensive
line. Right tackle Jon Jansen was lost for the season with a
broken leg in Week 1, and center Casey Rabach and right tackle
Todd Wade also have missed time with injuries. To fill Thomas'
roster spot, the Redskins re-signed seventh-year guard Rick
DeMulling. DeMulling spent eight weeks on the roster earlier
this season, appearing in three games.
Nearly 84 million Pro Bowl votes cast on NFL.com and Sprint Wireless
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre received 1,140,863
votes to lead all NFL All-Stars in balloting for the 2008 NFL
Pro Bowl, NFL.com announced today. Presented by Sprint, 2008
NFL Pro Bowl voting on NFL.com and on wireless phones with
Sprint service ended on Tuesday, December 11. There was a
record 83.7 million votes cast on NFL.com and on wireless
phones with Sprint service using more than 2,262,000 ballots.
There were nearly 14 million more votes cast this year than
last year. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady
(1,037,608 votes) ranks second overall while Indianapolis
Colts quarterback Peyton Manning (991,418 votes), Dallas
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (830,789 votes) and New England
Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss (806,455 votes) round out
the top five on NFL.com. Romo received the highest number of
votes from voters using Sprint's service. The AFC and NFC
All-Star squads are made up of the consensus votes of fans,
players and coaches. Each group's vote counts one-third
towards determining the 43-man rosters that represent the
American Football Conference and National Football Conference
in the Pro Bowl. NFL players and coaches are casting their
votes December 13-14. The NFL is the only sports league that
combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its
all-star teams. It was the first professional sports league
to offer online all-star voting in 1995.
