"Tips... News... And More... All For The Love Of The Game"
------------------------------------------------------------
Take a moment to answer GopherCentral's Question of the Week:
Do you think stronger gun control laws would have prevented
the VA Tech massacre?
Question of the Week
------------------------------------------------------------
Fellow Duffers,
Boy am I rusty. I wish Dorthy and the Scarecrow could come by,
put some oil on my joints and help me onto the course. But that
isn't going to happen. I need to play. Actually I want to go
to the course and chip and pitch for a couple of hours. Don't
discount those mini swings, they are practice. Plus
recalibrating my yardages with each of my wedges is a must.
How else am I going to insure that I don't three putt my way
into losing those Nassaus?

How to Think Away Your Slice
Avoid the mental pitfalls of the left-to-right shot
By Richard Coop, Ph.D.,
GOLF Magazine's mental-game and performance consultant.
Fixing a major swing flaw is generally not an option once you tee
off-it usually just makes matters worse. If your slice is out of
control during your round, however, here are your best bets for
reeling it in.
Adjust your mindset
If you're sure your next shot is headed right, then trying to make
pars is going to get disheartening. So change your personal par
for that round. Mentally play for bogey-or even double-on every
hole, and you'll start to feel rewarded when you avoid those
triples and Xs.
Don't force shots
If you've got 150 yards to the pin, and you normally hit a 7-iron,
take a 6-iron, or even a 5, and swing at 75 percent. Throttling
back will not only lessen the effects of your swing flaw, it will
also relax you and allow you to work your way methodically from
tee to green.
Forget the hole
Make getting your ball on the green your goal-everything else is
gravy. Aim for the left half of the green (or the center of the
green if there's trouble on the left) and let your putter do the
rest.
Rediscover tempo
Forget your mechanics for now-they're already on the fritz.
Instead, concentrate on making a smooth, pendulum swing on every
shot. You may find that when you stop paying attention, your
mechanics will find their way back.

My Best Tip For Amateurs, by Bruce Fleisher
Callaway Golf Staff Professional and Champions Tour Winner
People want to hit the ball longer. That’s the selling point
of every club on the market. But hitting the ball longer is
very misleading. As I was driving into the Ely Callaway
Performance Center, I saw the guys hitting all kinds of drivers
on the range. I told them, "You can hit that driver all day
long but if you don’t make it from six feet, it doesn’t
matter."
If you want to practice your golf swing, take your 8-iron
because it’s a long enough club to finish your swing but it’s
a short enough yardage to measure your accuracy. For timing and
tempo, the 8-iron is a very good club to practice your golf
swing.
It’s been said before but if you are really serious about
improving your game, you have to practice your short game. I
would go right to my club pro and learn two or three shots that
you have had trouble with through the years. Then I’d go to that
putter and practice my putting. Try to be a better lag putter.
For a lot of people, putting is such a non-entity in their minds
but it really is 50 percent of the game, if not more.
If you have a full-time job and have to work, you’re probably
never going to be playing on a pro tour; there are simply not
enough hours in the day. But if you find even an hour a week,
even 20 minutes at a time, it will make a huge difference in
your game.

Don't Measure Yourself By Your Best Shot, by Ron Beck
Director of Golf, Fox Hopyard Golf Course, East Haddam, Conn
Too many golfers measure themselves by the best shot they've
hit. If a person's best 3-wood carries 230 yards, they'll go
for the carry that requires a 230-yard 3-wood, a shot they
might make one out of 10 times. Peoples’ expectations are
based on their best shot and not realistic averages.
All too often we see golfers trying to play low percentage,
heroic recovery shots out of trouble. If you punch out of
the woods, you're not wasting a shot; you're probably saving
a shot. Don't follow a bad shot with a stupid shot. If you
hit a bad shot, take your medicine and regroup. The most
important shot is the next one.

LIMIT YOUR TIME SPENT OVER THE BALL, by Ted Kiegiel
Carolina Country Club, Raleigh, North Carolina
Golf is not a reflex sport so the longer you stand over the ball
the greater chance there is of you having a dialog with yourself
and starting to go through your checklist of what it takes to hit
the ball well. On the golf course, I prefer players to feel like
they are in touch with the target--looking and observing it for a
longer period of time. Then their eyes should be coming back to
the ball and within a few moments, they should start their
backswing.
Think of it this way: the longer you’re over the ball, the more
your thoughts are really inside yourself. Many players have a
checklist of swing thoughts that essentially make you get in
your own way of succeeding. I want your eyes to be looking at
the target so you feel like your thoughts and attention are more
"outside" of your body. Be aware of the landing area, wind speed,
elevation, etc.
Studies tell us that the thought process of world-class athletes
is much more limited than it is for intermediate athletes.
Intermediate players are the ones standing over the ball having
that conversation with themselves.
