JUNE POINTER, SINGER WITH POINTER SISTERS, DEAD AT 52
The youngest member of the 1980s hitmakers the Pointer
Sisters, June Pointer, has died of cancer in Santa Monica,
Calif., at age 52. Pointer, who had been hospitalized since
January, died Tuesday, her family said in a statement
released Wednesday. "(June died) in the arms of her sisters
Ruth and Anita and her brothers, Aaron and Fritz, by her
side," the statement said. "Although her sister Bonnie was
unable to be present, she was with her in spirit." The
multiple Grammy Award-winning Oakland, Calif., sisters had
a string of hits in the 1980s such as "Jump (For My Love),"
"He's So Shy," "Automatic," "I'm So Excited" and "Neutron
Dance." June Pointer admitted to years of substance abuse
and pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine in 2004,
E! Online said. Her drug problems led to her eventual
expulsion from the singing group, E! said.

RICHARD PEARLMAN, LYRIC OPERA DIRECTOR, DEAD AT 68
The director of Chicago's Lyric Opera Center for American
Artists, Richard Pearlman, has died of lung cancer at age 68.
Pearlman died while in a coma Saturday at Rush University
Medical Center, two years after his cancer diagnosis, the
Chicago Tribune reported. Pearlman began training opera
stars of the future at the center in 1995. Under his direct-
ion, the Lyric's apprenticeship program became one of the
top four in the country along with those in Houston, San
Francisco and New York's Metropolitan Opera, the Tribune
said. He trained from 1960 to 1963 under four legends of
opera and theater: Gian Carlo Menotti, Franco Zeffirelli,
Luchino Visconti and Tyrone Guthrie, the Tribune said. His
directing debut for the Washington Opera was the first U.S.
staging of Berlioz's "Béatrice et Bénédict" in the 1964-
1965 season. Among his many directing debuts through the
years was the first professional production of the Who's
rock opera "Tommy" in 1991, starring Bette Midler, for the
Seattle Opera. His survivors include an aunt and several
cousins.

RAJKUMAR, LEGENDARY INDIAN FILM STAR, DEAD AT 78
Legendary Indian film star Rajkumar died of a heart attack
Wednesday in Bangalore, India, at age 78. The star of more
than 200 films was discovered unconscious at his home and
pronounced dead at M.S. Ramaiah Hospital, the Press Trust
of India reported. "We tried to revive him but could not
succeed," his personal physician, Dr. Ramana Rao, told PTI.
"We did everything." The actor had been in poor health ever
since his abduction six years ago by the notorious bandit
Veerappan, PTI said. The actor and three members of his
family spent weeks as hostages in the forests of southern
India before being released. He was most recently hospital-
ized for chest pain a little more than a month ago. As word
of his death spread, hundreds of grief-stricken fans flocked
to the actor's home, where his body was brought from the
hospital, PTI said. The city of Bangalore was described by
the BBC as "virtually shut down" as residents mourned the
actor's death. Government officials declared a two-day period
of mourning, closing government offices, schools, businesses
and theaters, the Times of India reported.

HELEN COHN, MATRIARCH OF NUDIE SUITS, DEAD AT 92
Helen "Bobbie Nudie" Cohn, "the backbone" behind her husband's
Hollywood Nudie suit business, has died in Valencia, Calif,
at age 92. Her husband, Nudie Cohn, created the colorful
rhinestone-bedecked suits first favored by country stars in
the 1940s and later embraced by rock stars as well. One of
the most famous Nudie suits was the gold lame number created
for Elvis Presley in the 1950s, the Los Angeles Times said.
Hank Williams Sr., Roy Rogers and Buck Owens were all buried
in Nudie suits, the newspaper said. Another notable Nudie
suit, worn by Gram Parsons in late 1960s, was decorated with
marijuana leaves. Elton John, Keith Richards and Johnny
Cash were all dressed by Nudie as well. Even after the death
of her husband in 1984, Cohn continued to run the store for
10 more years with her daughter and granddaughter. The big
plastic horse that stood outside the Nudie store along with
its sign and an original sewing machine are in the Country
Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. Cohn is survived by two
granddaughters, three great-grandchildren and a sister.
