MIKE DOUGLAS, TV TALK SHOW HOST, DEAD AT 81
Mike Douglas, TV talk show pioneer, passed away last Friday
on his 81st birthday. Douglas started The Mike Douglas Show
in 1961 and hosted it until 1982. Widely regarded as one of
the pioneers of American daytime TV talk shows, some of his
30,000 guests included Johnny Cash, Juday Garland, and Tiger
Woods. Douglas drew on his affable personality and singing
talent during 21 years as a talk show host. After his program
went off the air, Douglas generally retired from the showbiz
scene. Douglas died of undisclosed causes at a hospital in
Palm Beach Springs, Florida. He became dehydrated on the golf
course a few weeks ago and had been treated on and off since.

BRUNO KIRBY, ACTOR, DEAD AT 57
Bruno Kirby, who played Billy Crystal's pal in "City
Slickers" and "When Harry Met Sally," has died in Los
Angeles at the age of 57. Kirby, who died Monday, had only
recently been diagnosed with leukemia, according to a state-
ment by his wife actress Lynn Sellers. Born in New York on
April 28, 1949, Kirby had a prolific 30-year career acting
in films and on television. He had accrued a list of roles
when cast as Clemenza in "The Godfather Part II," assisting
the young Don Corleone to dispose of a carpet, E! Online
reported. His film roles included "This is Spinal Tap," "The
Freshman," "Donnie Brasco," "Good Morning Vietnam" and
"Sleepers." In 1989, Kirby was Crystal's writer friend Jess
who did not understand the appeal of Sally, Meg Ryan's
character in the hit comedy "When Harry Met Sally." On TV, he
did guest spots on "Mad About You" and "Frasier," Homicide:
Life on the Street" and other shows.

SAM WHITE, DIRECTOR, DEAD AT 99
Famed director Sam White, who once worked with Hollywood
greats Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, has died in Los
Angeles at the age of 99. Also known as a producer and
editor, White died on Aug. 5 in Encino, ending a career that
featured him doing everything from making World War II
training films to directing Astaire and Rogers in cinematic
dance sequences, Daily Variety said. A brother in the White
Brothers film and TV pioneer family, White also worked
alongside actor Bela Lugosi on the set of "Return of the
Vampire," with William Shatner on "White Comanche" and
helped Frank Sinatra make his film debut with "People are
Funny," the report said. White and his brothers Jack and
Jules were honored in 1990 through an oral history entitled
"The White Brothers," and again in 2003 with a wall of honor
at the Motion Picture and Television Home. Variety said the
renowned Hollywood great is survived by a daughter, two
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

RUFUS HARLEY, JAZZ BAGPIPER, DEAD AT 70
Known as "the world's first jazz bagpiper," Rufus Harley has
died in his home town of Philadelphia at the age of 70. His
son Messiah Patton Harley told The New York Times that his
father, who once played alongside jazz greats like John
Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, died on Aug. 1 from prostate
cancer. Although he was of African-American and Cherokee
descent, Rufus Harley became the first person to openly
introduce bagpipes into the jazz mainstream in the 1960s,
typically performing in both an African dashiki and a
Scottish kilt. Originally inspired by the Black Watch bag-
pipe band's performance at the 1963 funeral of U.S.
President John Kennedy, Harley went on to record numerous
albums with multiple jazz icons and perform on a variety
of TV shows, the Times said.
