Welcome to another edition of Dead End.
This week we look back on the lives of some brilliant and
talented individuals. First, we remember the physicist who
helped launch the United States into the space age - James
Van Allen. We also remember internationally known ballerina
Melissa Hayden and '50s music producer Richard Barrett.
Finally, we remember comic strip artist Bob Thaves, the
creator of syndicated comic strip "Frank & Ernest."

JAMES VAN ALLEN, RENOWNED PHYSICIST, DEAD AT 91
Renowned physicist James Van Allen, who helped launch the
United States into the space age and for whom the Van Allen
radiation belts are named, has died. He was 91. Explorer I,
the first successful U.S. space venture, carried, at Van
Allen's insistence, a small Geiger counter. That led to a
significant scientific finding: the discovery of two belts
of intense radiation that surround the Earth. Although his
scientific accomplishments were myriad, he opposed manned
space flight: "Man is a fabulous nuisance in space right
now (1959). He's not worth all the costs of putting him up
there and keeping him comfortable." In 1951 Van Allen became
a professor and head of the University of Iowa's Department
of Physics and Astronomy, the Register reported. He held
that position until he retired from teaching in 1985.

MELISSA HAYDEN, VIBRANT BALLET STAR, DEAD AT 83
Internationally known ballerina Melissa Hayden has died of
pancreatic cancer at her home in Winston-Salem, N.C., at age
83. Hayden, who died Wednesday, was known for her blend of
individuality and versatility in her dance, the New York
Times reported Thursday. "Blunt honesty and generosity in
her life and dancing, that was her name," said Jacques
d'Amboise, her longtime partner. Hayden started her dancing
career with the American Ballet Theater in 1945 then left
in 1947 and returned for the 1953 and 1954 seasons. But
mostly she was a member of New York's City Ballet, joining
the troupe shortly after it was founded by George Balanchine
and Lincoln Kirstein at the end of 1948. She retired from
dancing in September 1973 and became a teacher of the art.
Hayden is survived by her husband, Donald Coleman, as well
as a son and a daughter.

RICHARD BARRETT, MUSIC PRODUCER, DEAD AT 73
Richard Barrett, who produced and managed 1950s New York
Rhythm & Blues music and made stars of the Chantels and
Frankie Lymon, has died at age 73. The New York Daily News
said he was apparently 73, but never admitted his age.
Barrett was influential in creating the R&B sound. He
started singing with a vocal group, the Valentines, because
they wanted to record a song he had written, "Summer's Love,"
the Daily News said. The Valentines later recorded "Lily
Maebelle," "My Story of Love" and "Woo Woo Train." In 1955,
Barrett became involved with The Teenagers, whose vocalist
Frankie Lymon he coached in style and phrasing, the newspaper
said. Barrett also produced Little Anthony and the Channels.
Barrett could do it all -- sing, produce and choreograph,
the newspaper reported. Barrett died of pancreatic cancer,
though he was still pitching almost to his last day, the
Daily News said.
