FRANCES BERGEN, ACTRESS, DEAD AT 84
Actress Frances Bergen, wife of ventriloquist Edgar Bergen
and mother of actress Candice Bergen, has died in Los Angeles
at age 84. Bergen died from a prolonged illness Monday at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Los Angeles Times reported
Wednesday. The model who portrayed "the Chesterfield girl"
and "the Ipana girl" in magazines and on billboards appeared
in several films and TV shows in the 1950s, but eventually
set her own ambitions aside to be a foil for her husband and
his dummy, Charlie McCarthy, the Times said. She picked up
her acting career in the 1980s with roles in "American
Gigolo," "Rich and Famous" and "The Sting II," but by then,
instead of being "Edgar's wife," she was "Candy's mother."
But, the wife and mother said she had no regrets and would
not have traded her family for a career. In addition to
Candice, she is survived by a son, Kris, and a granddaughter.

STANLEY CHERRY, FAMED TV WRITER, DEAD AT 74
Stanley Z. "Zack" Cherry, who wrote episodes of "Gilligan's
Island" and "Flipper," died last month from cancer in
California at the age of 74. Daily Variety reported that
Cherry, who also produced and directed over 30 films during
his Hollywood career, died on Sept. 27 in Studio City, Calif.,
from cancer. In addition to his work on such hit TV shows
such as "The Addams Family" and "Petticoat Junction," Cherry
had earned two national documentary awards while working for
the California affiliate of NBC-TV. Teamed with his wife
Carol, Cherry also offered his writing talents to the TV
films "Carpool," "Cowboy" and "Illusions." After retiring
from both TV and film, Cherry went on to garner a master's
degree in psychology which he used to offer therapy to
individuals with Hollywood-related issues. He is survived by
his wife, two children, two stepsons, and 12 grandchildren.
ISABEL BIGLEY BARNETT, BROADWAY STAR, DEAD AT 80
Former Broadway star Isabel Bigley Barnett, who won a Tony
award for her role in "Guys and Dolls," has died in Los
Angeles at the age of 80. The Los Angeles Times reported
that Barnett, who was the last survivor of the famed
Broadway production, died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center from pulmonary disease. "She was the ideal ingenue,"
Institute of the American Musical President Miles Kreuger
said of the woman who portrayed Sarah Brown in the long-
running musical. "She was pretty and had a beautiful voice
and could act." "I remember 'If I Were a Bell' -- she
brought such delightful humor, a subtle humor, to the sing-
ing of the song ... It really was a thrilling moment in
the theater," he added. The paper said that Barnett, who
became the first chairwoman of Palm Desert's McCallum
Theatre in 2005, is survived by her husband, Lawrence R.
Barnett, six children, 16 grandchildren, and four great-
grandchildren.
TAMARA DOBSON, ACTRESS, DEAD AT 59
Tamara Dobson, the actress best known for her portrayal of
government agent Cleopatra Jones in two Hollywood films, has
died at the age of 59. Dobson, whose big break came in 1973
when she took on the title role in "Cleopatra Jones," died
Monday in Baltimore, Md., from complications related to
multiple sclerosis and pneumonia, the Baltimore Sun reported.
Dobson followed up her 1973 film, which fell into the 1970's
"blaxploitation" film genre, by reprising the kung-fu fight-
ing role with the 1975 action film, "Cleopatra Jones and the
Casino of Gold." The one-time tallest leading woman in film
according to the "Guinness Book of World Records," the 6-foot-
2-inch former model also helped influence the fashion industry
with her degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
She is survived by her brother, Peter Dobson, and her sister,
Darilyn Dobson.
