Actor and former boxer Robert Earl Jones died on September 7
of natural causes. His most recognizable role is that of con
artist Luther Coleman in the movie The Sting. Today's DEAD

****Some famous people born during this week in history:
-- Frankie Avalon - September 18, 1940
Teen idol. Avalon was a child prodigy trumpet player, earn-
ing an appearance on the Jackie Gleason Show and making
records for RCA Victor's subsidiary, 'X' Records. He was
discovered by local impresario Bob Marcucci while playing
backup trumpet in a local band. Eight months later, Avalon's
first single, Cupid, came out on Marcucci's Chancellor label,
and his third release, Dede Dinah, hit the Top Ten. His
first number one single was 1959's Venus, and he placed no
fewer than six records in the Top 40 in that year alone.
Although Avalon was the first of the manufactured teen idols,
he had a music background to go along with the looks, and it
was that talent that helped him succeed. In 1962, he teamed
up with Annette Funicello and reinvented himself as a clean-
cut, pretty-boy surfer in a wildly successful batch of Beach
Party movies.
-- Trisha Yearwood - September 19, 1964
Country singer. After graduating from Belmont University in
Nashville, Yearwood was hired as a full time employee at MTM
Records. She benefited from the company's resources, record-
ing a handful of demo tapes and working as a backup singer
for some up-and-coming artists. With the help of producer
Garth Fundis, Yearwood finally won a contract with MCA
Records, and, in 1991, released her self-titled debut album,
which was certified double platinum for two million copies
sold. Her single She's in Love with the Boy debuted at No.
1 on the singles chart, making her the first female country
singer to accomplish that feat. Yearwood secured similar
success with the 1992 release of Hearts in Armor. In 1997,
Yearwood released Songbook: A Collection of Hits and was
also honored with two Grammy Awards. Most recently, she
recorded Real Live Woman, which featured the popular tracks
I'm Still Alive, Try Me Again, and the Bruce Springsteen
cover Sad Eyes.
-- Stephen King - September 21, 1947
Writer. The success of his first horror novel, Carrie,
enabled him to publish earlier work under the pseudonym
Richard Bachman, a ploy which disguised the true extent of
his prolific output of novels, short stories, and screen-
plays, until the ruse became public knowledge and he
abandoned it. His own name became synonymous with best-
selling novels blending horror, fantasy, and science fiction
into a consistently scary mix. His books have sold more
than 100 million copies worldwide and include Salem's Lot,
The Shining, The Dead Zone, Misery, Gerald's Game, and Cell.
He has also written collections of short stories, including
Hearts in Atlantis. Several were made into successful films,
and he himself tried his hand at film directing.

-- Jim Croce - September 20, 1973
Born January 10, 1943
Musician. Began his professional music career playing in
bands while he was a student at Villanova University in 1964.
In the late 1960s Capitol records signed Jim and his wife
Ingrid to a recording contract. Their one and only album was
a failure and Jim returned to his hometown of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania and worked for a time as a truck driver. He
continued writing songs and was later signed as a solo artist
by ABC Records. He had three highly successful albums with
ABC and several hit singles including, You Don't Mess Around
With Jim, Operator, Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, I Got A Name, Time
In A Bottle, and I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song. His
career came to a tragic end when he and his fellow musicians
boarded a private plane in Louisiana to travel to a show in
Texas. The plane crashed in Natchitoches, Louisiana shortly
after takeoff killing everyone on board.
-- George C. Scott - September 22, 1999
Born October 18, 1927
Stage and film actor. His New York stage debut in the 1957
Shakespeare Festival brought him such praise that he was
soon taking leading roles in stage plays and films, and
starred in an admired television series, East Side, West
Side. He made his film debut in The Hanging Tree, and other
early roles included The Hustler and Dr Strangelove. His
most celebrated film role was in Patton, for which he
received an Oscar for Best Actor, but he refused to accept
it after denouncing the Academy Awards as a meat parade. In
1971 he also refused the Emmy Award as Best Actor in a TV
production of Arthur Miller's The Price. Intense as an actor
and in person, he was particularly known for his portrayal
of angry men, but he also played comic and warm-hearted
characters.

--Answer to "WHO AM I?"
Peter Frampton. Frampton was a musical prodigy who taught
himself to play the guitar at age seven. He spent his pre-
teen years performing with bands like The Little Ravens, The
Trubeats, and George & the Dragons. Frampton eventually
caught the attention of The Rolling Stones' manager, Bill
Wyman, who recruited him to join the Preachers. In 1967,
under Wyman's tutelage, Frampton became the lead guitarist
and singer for the group The Herd.
He left the group after two years and hit singles like From
the Underworld and I Don't Want Our Loving to Die. He formed
the blues-based rock band Humble Pie with Steve Marriott,
but left two years later to strike out on his own. He
launched his solo career in 1972 with the release of his
debut album Wind of Change. He toured extensively over the
next few years, promoting the albums Frampton's Camel,
Somethin's Happening and Frampton.
His 1976 live double recording Frampton Comes Alive! sold
over 10 million copies, becoming the bestselling live rock
album in history. His singles Baby I Love Your Way, Do You
Feel Like I Do? and Show Me the Way dominated the American
charts. After a near-fatal automobile accident, Frampton was
forced to temporarily shelve his music career. He recorded
sporadically throughout the 1980s, most notably Breaking All
The Rules, The Art of Control, and Premonition.
