"Real stories and fascinating details behind the
most intriguing people who have ever lived."
------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings Biography Buff,
It was on this day in 1870 that General Robert Edward Lee
died. Lee, the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern
Virginia, died peacefully at his home. He was 63. He earned
a reputation as one of the greatest military leaders in
history for his use of brilliant tactics and battlefield
leadership.
When his military career ended, he accepted the presidency
of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. Under his
leadership, the struggling institution's enrollment
increased from a few dozen to more than 300 students. The
school changed its name to Washington and Lee College soon
after he died.

--COMINGS AND GOINGS:
****Some famous people born during this week in history:
-- Chevy Chase - October 8, 1943
Actor, comedian. After graduating from Bard College with a
B.A. in English, Chase went on to work odd jobs while
pursuing a career in comedy. His first stint as a performer
was with the New York comedy video workshop Channel One,
which got him noticed by producer Lorne Michaels, who hired
Chase for the first season of Saturday Night Live in 1975.
He soon became the anchor of the show's Weekend Update
segment, attracting viewers with his opening "Good evening,
I'm Chevy Chase and you're not." He left after only one
season to pursue film opportunities, but it wasn't until
Caddyshack in 1980 that he struck gold. In 1983, Chase
starred in National Lampoon's Vacation, the first of four
popular films chronicling the comic misadventures of the
Griswold family. In recent years, Chase has chosen to work
in family films, such as Man of the House and Snow Day.
-- Joan Cusack - October 11, 1962
Actress. Cusack grew up in a family of actors, most notably
her youngest brother John. Cusack began making films in her
teens, and soon became known for her hilarious, and often
touching, supporting characters in such films as My
Bodyguard and Sixteen Candles. Her film breakthrough was in
Working Girl, where she played Melanie Griffith's street-
smart best friend. She earned a Best Supporting Actress
Oscar nomination for the role. In the early 1990s, she left
Hollywood to spend more time with her family, returning to
rave reviews in 1997 for her role in In & Out. She also
gave a number of strong supporting performances in Grosse
Point Blank, Arlington Road, Runaway Bride, and Cradle
Will Rock.
-- Lenny Bruce - October 13, 1925
Comedian. He joined the navy at age 16 and served during
World War 2 until 1946. He held various jobs while studying
acting in New York. An appearance on the Arthur Godfrey
television show brought him national attention. A stand-up
nightclub entertainer, his scatalogical language and
outrageous, sardonic humour was alternately called obscene
or 'radically relevant'. Denounced for blasphemy in
Australia and banned from performing in England, he was
arrested for obscenity after a Greenwich Village show in
1964. Increasingly paranoid, he died of a drug overdose.
His autobiography, How to Talk Dirty and Influence People,
was published in 1965. A play Lenny was devoted to him, and
he is regarded as having 'liberated' a whole new generation
of comedians.
****Some famous people who have died during this week
in history:
-- Christopher Reeve - October 10, 2004
Born Sep. 25, 1952
Actor. Although Reeve is most well known for his role as
Superman, he starred in many other movies, such as Deathtrap,
Village of the Damned, and The Remains of the Day. He also
made his Broadway debut in A Matter of Gravity. In May of
1995, he was competing in an equestrian competition in
Culpepper, Virginia, when he was thrown from his horse. He
fractured the top two vertebrae in his neck and damaged his
spinal cord. After undergoing many months of therapy, he
was able to breathe without a respirator, and move his
index finger, as well as regaining sensation in other parts
of his body. He became a major advocate for stem cell
research.
-- Redd Foxx - October 11, 1991
Born Dec. 9, 1922
Memorable comedian and television actor, best known for his
role as junkman Fred G. Sanford in the popular 1970's comedy
Sanford and Son, notorious for his frank, tell-it-like-it-is
style and joking about everything from sex to color barriers,
he brought taboo issues in the open. During his career Redd
Foxx broke new ground for minorities and comedians alike.
After Foxx left the show in 1977, he moved to Las Vegas,
blowing most of his earnings on a expensive lifestyle, which
would later catch up with him. In the late 1980s the IRS
seized most of what he owned because of back taxes.
Desperately looking for work he was cast by actor Eddie
Murphy with his long-time friend Della Reese in "Harlem
Nights" in 1989. In 1991 Foxx and Reese were offered a
series on CBS, which Murphy produced entitled The Royal
Family. He suffered a heart attack on the set and was
pronounced dead later that evening.
