--COMINGS AND GOINGS:
****Some famous people born during this week in history:
-- Shania Twain - August 28, 1965
Country singer, songwriter. In 1993, Twain went to Nashville,
signed with Mercury Records, and released her self-titled
debut album. With the help of her music producer husband
Robert "Mutt" Lange, Twain released The Woman in Me in 1995,
which became the bestselling country album by a female
artist in history. Her third album, Come On Over, contained
eight hit singles, and holds the distinction of being the
bestselling country album of all time. In 1999, she
released a fourth album, On the Way. Twain also re-recorded
the single You've Got a Way for the motion picture soundtrack
Notting Hill.
-- Van Morrison - August 31, 1945
Singer, musician, and songwriter. After leaving school at
the age of 15, he played guitar and later saxophone in
several teenage groups, making his first recordings as a
member of Them during the 1960s. His first solo hit was
Brown-Eyed Girl and a year later he released the highly
acclaimed, surreal album Astral Weeks. Other successes of
that period include the single Caravan, and the albums
Moondance and Tupelo Honey. In the 1980s his work developed
a more mystical dimension, and later albums include
Enlightenment, The Healing Game, Down the Road, and Magic
Time. A celebrated live performer, he insisted that every
note be recorded live for the acclaimed album It's Too Late
To Stop Now.
-- Salma Hayek - September 2, 1966
Actress, director, producer. In 1991, Hayek moved to Los
Angeles from Mexico to learn English and become an actress.
She landed a role in 1995's Desperado, which helped her earn
roles in movies such as The Faculty, Wild Wild West, and
Fools Rush In. Subsequently, Hayek became engaged with
smaller, independent pictures and started her own production
company, Ventanarosa. In 2002, her intellectual approach to
filmmaking culminated in her dream role in Frida, in which
she both produced and starred. She followed the success of
Frida with large-scale projects, including directing 2002's
The Maldonado Miracle, starring in the last episode of the
Desperado trilogy, and appearing in the thriller After the
Sunset.
