--COMINGS AND GOINGS:
****Some famous people born during this week in history:
-- Chubby Checker - October 3, 1941
Singer. Checker began performing in churches and on the
streets with his singing group, The Quantrells. In 1959, he
signed with Cameo-Parkway Records, and released two minor
hits. However, his version of The Twist and his accompanying
dance routine moved Checker to the top of the charts. As a
dance movement, the Twist revolutionized popular culture by
giving couples the freedom to break apart on the dance floor.
The song went to No. 1 on the billboards in August 1961,
where it remained for 18 straight weeks. He continued to
capitalize on the twist theme with similarly titled songs,
such as Twistin' U.S.A. and Twist it Up in the early 1960s,
and even Let's Twist Again in 1999.
-- Bob Geldof - October 5, 1954
Rock musician and philanthropist. He formed the successful
rock group, the Boomtown Rats, in 1975. Moved by the suffer-
ing in famine-stricken Ethiopia, he established the pop
charity Band Aid trust in 1984, which raised money for
Africa famine relief through the release of the record Do
They Know It's Christmas? In 2004 he was appointed a member
of the newly-launched Commission for Africa initiative to
help produce new ideas for reducing poverty in the continent.
In November that year a new Band Aid formed to record a
second version of Do they know it's Christmas? to raise
funds for famine-stricken Darfur in W Sudan, and the single
topped the charts for several weeks including Christmas. In
2005, he organized the Live 8 charity pop concerts timed to
coincide with the G8 summit on world poverty.
-- Simon Cowell - October 7, 1959
Record producer. While working at EMI Music Publishing in
1979, Cowell developed his uncanny sense for what makes a
music industry hit. In 1989, he was hired by BMG Records and
has served as an executive for BMG ever since. Throughout
his career, Cowell has achieved sales of over 25 million
albums, over 70 top 30 records and 17 number 1 singles. In
2001, he teamed up with Simon Fuller to produce a show in
which the public chooses the next big solo star. The show,
Pop Idol, debuted in the UK, and was an instant success.
The American version, American Idol, debuted in 2002, with
Cowell once again judging alongside singer Paula Abdul and
producer Randy Jackson.
****Some famous people who have died during this week
in history:
-- Janis Joplin - October 4, 1970
Born January 19, 1943
Rock Singer. Joplin dropped out the University of Texas and
spent two years traveling, performing and becoming drug
addicted. In 1966, she became the lead singer for Big Brother
and the Holding Company, and became recognized for her sing-
ing at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. She is featured on
the band's second album, Cheap Thrills. The next year, she
formed the Kosmic Blues Band, and became further noticed
when she performed solo at the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival.
In 1970, she sang with the Full Tilt Boogie Band. On October
4, 1970, she was found dead in her room at the Hollywood,
California Landmark Motor Hotel, from an apparent heroin-
alcohol overdose. Her best selling album, Pearl, was
released posthumously, and she was inducted into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
-- Rodney Dangerfield - October 5, 2004
Born November 22, 1921
Actor, comedian. In the 1960s, Dangerfield's stand up act
took off with various television appearances and comedy
albums. The man who was famous for his signature phrase "I
can't get no respect," he opened up the self-named comedy
club Dangerfield's in New York City. There he helped the
careers of Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Roseanne Barr, Jeff
Foxworthy, Tim Allen and the late Sam Kinison. His movie
career was as varied and interesting as his comedy act. He
made his acting debut in the 1971 movie The Projectionist.
He would later appear in such movies as Caddyshack, Easy
Money, Back to School, Ladybugs, Moving, The Scout, and Meet
Wally Sparks. Over the years, he never lost his blunt and
sarcastic appeal for his brand of humor. He was a regular
when Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show and frequently
appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
