President George W. Bush Thursday reaffirmed his support
for a Palestinian state after meeting in Washington with
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
The two presidents made brief statements to reporters and
took no questions.
"I assured the president that a Palestinian state is a
high priority for me and my administration -- a viable
state, a state that doesn't look like Swiss cheese, a state
that provides hope," Bush said. "It's in -- I believe it's
in Israel's interest and the Palestinian people's interest
to have leaders willing to work toward the achievement of
that state." Bush is pushing for a settlement between
Israel and the Palestinians before he leaves office in
January. "I believe very strongly that time is of the
essence; we are working very hard and hope not to waste
any time and continue these efforts to achieve peace,"
Abbas said.
While he has sometimes criticized Israel for its settlement
policy and attacks on Gaza, Abbas said only that he knows
the road to peace is paved with obstacles, not flowers.
What are your thoughts on Bush's commitment to Palestine?

Police: Woman lived with dead sister
Detroit police said they believe an elderly woman has been
living with the corpse of her dead sister on her kitchen
floor -- possibly for the last three years. Investigators
said the corpse was partially mummified and portions of
the body appeared to have been eaten by a dog and cat
living at the residence, the Detroit Free Press reported
Thursday. Police said the woman -- who appeared to be
suffering from mental problems -- was taken to a crisis
center for treatment. They said they made a visit to the
home after a neighbor phoned police to report she had not
seen the deceased woman for a long time.

Woman takes on coconut plucking task
Sharmila in Kerala, India, took to coconut plucking from
the tall trees to earn extra income but in so doing broke
into a traditionally male domain. The 37-year-old part-time
government employee in the southern coastal state said she
has no fear of scrambling up a tree of any height to get at
the coconuts, a staple among the people. The hazardous
job traditionally has been performed by men in India.
However, Sharmila was forced into the profession because
fewer young men are entering it, the Press Trust of India
reported. The report said she tackles 10 to 15 trees a day,
earning about 25 U.S. cents a tree. "As I started taking
up the unusual job, my neighbors and people nearby stared
at me in disbelief and awe, wondering whether a woman can
and should take up the highly risky job," she told the
Press Trust of India, adding she has now become a sought
after tree climber because of her customer relations.

Tag may return to Va. school playground
A McLean, Va., elementary school principal who banned
children from playing tag said the game may soon return to
the school playground. Kent Gardens Elementary School
Principal Robyn Hooker -- who three weeks ago barred
children from playing tag after she said the game was
becoming too aggressive -- said students have received a
week of "reorientation lessons on playground safety" in
gym classes as well as lessons on safe recess behavior in
their classrooms, The Washington Post reported. She said
in an e-mail to parents that due to the completion of the
program, "full recess schedule of activities should be able
to resume by Friday ... in honor of the national Playground
Safety Week." Hooker said she declared a moratorium on
the popular chasing game after students were observed being
knocked down and piled upon while playing. She said some
students complained of being forced into the game against
their will. Parents applauded the game's imminent return.
Chris Delta, mother of two Kent Gardens students, said she
was pleased that the school is taking a "more reasonable
approach to dealing with aggressive behavior on the
playground."

What are your thought on US leading the world in prison
population?
"The answer is very simple. Other countries just kill
them. No space in a prison for a corpse. They also do not
cause money to be spent to feed, put clothes on them, or
house them. Sounds like a good system to me. ( no more
life in prison, if you are to die there, get it over
quick, bullets are cheap)"
"I found it hard to believe until I thought about it for
a moment. Perhaps the US has the highest inmate population
because other countries execute quickly rather than
incarcerate. Also, the fact that American parents seem
to indulge their children more instead of make them take
responsibility until the law finally catches up to them,
could definitely contribute."
"I am not surprised. Another countries don't spare criminals
life's."
