What's New? Part-2
Hi There Buddies...
Today we'll continue with our "new" foods list and hope-
fully you'll all get a chance to buy some of the ones that
appeal to you and see what you think.
You know the people who put these new foods out there are
always in search of better and faster ways to satisfy our
taste buds and our lifestyles, but DO check things out for
yourselves before purchasing anything, so you know what
your eating.
So many of us just shop for foods without ever checking to
see what the ingredients or the health benefits are. Next
time you're in your favorite store, take your food item and
turn it around, take a close look at the back or side label
and read what is says...if you're not sure, please let me
know and we'll have a column on food labels to help everyone
understand the importance of doing this and to avoid diet
disasters.
Before we go on with Part-2 of our "What's New" foods,
I'd like to share and encourage reader's questions from
everyone, here, and in the forum...
From Cheryl...
With all the controversy today about our food and to be
wary of cholesterol levels as well as sodium intake, I
have never run across the amount that should be taken per
day. I have asked various people but they never know.
A magazine at the Dr's office said 2,400 mg per day, max
for sodium. Is this correct? What about cholesterol? I
think an article from you on this subject would be
appreciated...! What about trans fats?? What is the
safe level??
Thanks!! Cheryl
Hi Cheryl...
I'm so guilty of not paying attention to this myself, but
the recommendations from the National Academy of Sciences
for sodium intake ranges from 120 mg/day for infants to
500 mg/day for children and adults, to a maximum amount of
2,400 to 3,000 mg/day or 6 to 7.5 grams of table salt/day.
Individuals with hypertension should see their physician
to determine if a sodium-restricted diet is appropriate
for them.
Also the desirable level of "total cholesterol" according
to the Mayo clinic is below 200 milligrams per deciliter
(mg/dL). Total triglycerides - below 150 mg/dL, HDL
cholesterol - 45 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol - 130 to 159 mg/dL.
There is really no "safe" amount of trans fats in our diets
and the FDA will require food producers to list the grams
of trans fats on labels with other nutrition facts from
now on.
These are all important items we should be looking for when
purchasing products from the supermarket. I hope this will
help you and I most definitely will write some columns on
these serious issues.
From Beverly...
I always enjoy your weekly articles. I have been on Weight
Watchers for nearly a year now and have lost seventy pounds.
I was really paying close attention to the new products
and was trying my best to figure out the points. You
stated that some of them were high in fiber but did not
list the fiber content. I realize most people don't care
about that but you have to have that to figure out the
points. I hope you put it in part 2 of your series so I
can see if I will be able to try the products or not.
Thank you so much, Beverly
Hi Beverly...
Congratulations on your very successful weight loss!!!
Unfortunately, the source (Prevention Magazine) does not
state the fiber content for all, it only states what I have
given you. I do understand your dilemma and would suggest
either going online and putting that particular product
into the search engine to see what comes up, and then check
to see if it contains a fiber content, or maybe just go
into your favorite supermarket and check to see if the
item is there on the shelves and look at the label.
I know Weight Watchers requires this information for their
point system and I do hope this helps.
