Readers:
A little over a week ago my boss, colleague and friend
Jaffer told me that he was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes.
I shook his hand and said, "Welcome to the club."
He had several questions for me. His questions were about
medication, blood-sugar monitors and diet. I just told him
about my experiences and said to consult his doctor about
these matters.
He told me something that I feel is very true when it comes
to living with diabetes. He said, "Being diagnosed with
diabetes has been a BLESSING. Why? Because for the first
time in my life I am paying attention to my health."
I think this is true for a lot of people. I know it's true
in my case.
Regards,
Steve

Protein Linked To Elevated Body Mass Index
MINNEAPOLIS - U.S. scientists say they've discovered an
abnormal protein is linked with elevated body mass index
in people of American Indian and Mexican ancestry.
Professor Gary Nelsestuen and colleagues at the University
of Minnesota found the variant of a common blood protein,
apolipoprotein C1, is also linked with obesity and type 2
diabetes.
The scientists say the abnormal protein might promote
metabolic efficiency and storage of body fat when food
is abundant. That could have provided a survival advantage
to ancient American Indians when food was scarce.
Nelsestuen says the discovery can be used to identify
those who are at risk for diabetes and to guide diet and
lifestyle choices to prevent diabetes.
The finding appears in the online issue of the
International Journal of Obesity.
