Vikings sign punter Kluwe to 6-year extension
The Minnesota Vikings signed punter Chris Kluwe to a six-year
deal Thursday, extending his contract through the 2013 season.
Kluwe leads the NFL with 18 punts inside the 20 this season and
has averaged 44.2 yards in the first six games. He would've been
a free agent after this season. "I'm glad to have it done,"
Kluwe said. "This is a great place to play. I enjoy being here.
And I look forward to the rest of this year and the next six
years to come." Kluwe was cut by Seattle as a rookie in 2005
and claimed off waivers by the Vikings. He spent the first
week and a half living in a hotel and wondering if he would
make the team, but the Vikings ultimately settled on him over
veteran Darren Bennett. Kluwe was second in the NFC with a
44.1-yard average that year and has shown a strong leg despite
needing knee surgery after his first season. "We know the
value of him to our football team," Vikings coach Brad Childress
said. "We're glad to have him for an extended period of time."
LB Thomas won't make trip to London
Dolphins coach Cam Cameron confirmed Thursday, just hours
before the team left for London, that linebacker Zach Thomas
would stay stateside. Thomas suffered whiplash in a car
accident after Sunday's loss to the Patriots, though Cameron
said there are no symptoms, such as a concussion, stemming
from the injury. Thomas missed two games earlier this season
after being concussed. "They haven't put it in that category,"
Cameron said of a possible concussion. The doctors recommended
rest and no travel, meaning the seven-time Pro Bowler will miss
Sunday's game against the Giants, his third missed game of the
season. "We talked last night; he feels a little uncomfortable.
He knows the position we are in as a team," Cameron said.
"At the same time, I'm going to defer to our medical staff."
Complaining about soreness and neck injuries, Thomas saw
Dr. Mickey Collins at the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center on Wednesday. Because of Thomas' injury, the Dolphins
have only four linebackers on the active roster, but Cameron
said defensive lineman Rob Ninkovich can also play the
position.

Payton: Faine will be game-time decision for Saints
Saints starting center Jeff Faine's left pectoral injury
could cause him to miss his team's game Sunday at San
Francisco. Faine left the game last Sunday against Atlanta
early in the third quarter and did not return. He had X-rays
this week and no tear was revealed. Payton said Thursday that
Faine will be a "game-time decision." "There's no surgery;
there's no procedure. It is what it is. It will take time to
where he feels strong enough in that area," Payton said.
If Faine cannot play, Jonathan Goodwin is expected to fill in
at center, as he did for most of the second half against the
Falcons. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Brian Young was limited
in practice after sitting out on Wednesday because of knee
stiffness. Young, who is tied for the team lead with two
sacks, had fluid drained from his left knee earlier this week.
Young has said he expects to play and practice on Friday, the
last practice before the Saints' scheduled flight to San
Francisco that night.
