Tank Johnson cleared to practice with Cowboys

Tank Johnson is not exactly back, but he'll be allowed to
practice with the Dallas Cowboys starting Friday. The NFL did
not reduce Johnson's eight-game suspension. However, the league
cleared the defensive tackle to begin practicing. Johnson is
eligible to return to game action Nov. 11 when the Cowboys
play at the New York Giants. Johnson officially applied for
reinstatement last week. The Cowboys have been granted a roster
exemption for Johnson that will expire on Nov. 5, at which time
they will have to make a move to reach the 53-man limit.
The Cowboys signed Johnson to a two-year deal Sept. 18 after
losing starting nose tackle Jason Ferguson for the season with
a torn biceps. Johnson will earn a prorated portion of a
$510,000 base salary this season and $605,000 next year. He
can earn an extra $1 million in incentives in the second year.
Johnson has been able to work out at Valley Ranch for the last
three weeks, but he has not had contact with coaches, per
rules of his suspension. The addition of Johnson will boost the
Cowboys' defensive line. Starting nose tackle Jay Ratliff has
played well, but there is concern the 298-pounder may wear down
from playing so much. The inexperienced Remi Ayodele has served
as Ratliff's backup. In 46 games with Chicago, Johnson had 63
tackles and nine sacks, but he is not completely familiar with
the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme. However, coach Wade Phillips has said
he does not believe it will be hard for Johnson to pick up the
scheme. Johnson's ability has not been a question, but his
off-field behavior has. But the Cowboys have been impressed
with his work in the player development program under Bryan
Wansley and Calvin Hill.

Dolphins add another defensive tackle

The Dolphins continue to beef up the defensive line by
picking up Anthony Bryant from the Baltimore Ravens practice
squad. He was placed on the active roster Thursday.
Bryant, a former Alabama standout who has spent the past
three seasons with five teams, is the fourth defensive
lineman the Dolphins have added in the past two weeks to
help with run support. The Dolphins have the second-worst
rushing defense in the NFL, allowing 168.5 yards per game.
He joins defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona and defensive end
Derreck Robinson, who were signed on Wednesday, and Sam
Rayburn, who joined the team last week to compensate for
injuries to Vonnie Holliday (fractured right ankle) and
Rodrique Wright (sprained left ankle). Before spending the
last six weeks on the Ravens practice squad, Bryant, who is
6-foot-3, 337-pounds, spent one season with Tampa Bay, which
selected him in the sixth-round of the 2005 draft. He played
for Detroit in 2006, starting three games. He started out this
year with the Falcons, which released him before training camp,
allowing him to sign with Baltimore. Bryant has 11 tackles
in eight career NFL games.

Panthers quarterback Delhomme undergoes successful elbow surgery

Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme underwent ligament-
replacement surgery on his right elbow on Thursday. Delhomme
decided last week to have the season-ending procedure, which
calls for replacing the damaged ligament with a tendon from
another part of the body. The 90-minute surgery was performed
by team physician Dr. Pat Connor at Carolinas Medical Center.
"The surgery went well," Connor said in a statement. "His
postoperative rehabilitation will start soon and he has an
excellent prognosis." Delhomme's rehabilitation is expected
to take seven to nine months. Delhomme has said he's confident
he'll be ready for the start of training camp in July. The
veteran quarterback, who has experienced elbow pain for
several years, aggravated the condition when he was sacked
in a win at Atlanta on Sept. 23. After sitting out two games
in hopes he'd feel better, Delhomme again experienced pain
when trying to throw, leading to the decision to have surgery.
The loss of Delhomme and a subsequent back injury to David
Carr forced Carolina to sign 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde,
who led the Panthers to a win at Arizona last Sunday. Coach
John Fox has not chosen a starter for Carolina's next game,
Oct. 28 against Indianapolis.
