Thousands expected at funeral for Redskins star Sean Taylor
Some mourned the athlete. Others mourned the classmate and
neighbor. All mourned the hometown hero. Thousands were
expected to follow a wake and vigil Sunday night with a
massive funeral for slain NFL player Sean Taylor on Monday
at Florida International University's Pharmed Arena. Meanwhile,
four young men charged with killing the Washington Redskins
star safety sat in jail cells on the other side of the state.
"We lost one of our best. The whole community feels it," said
Khary Pestaina, who lives in Taylor's former south Miami
neighborhood and came to the packed wake at Second Baptist
Church on Sunday. Wearing a dark suit, Taylor was in a wooden
coffin, surrounded by flower arrangements and heralded by a
church choir. Hundreds of mourners filed by him, bowing
their heads, crossing themselves and shaking with tears.
A police officer stood guard near a casket cordoned off by
red velvet ropes. "He's like my hero," whispered Josh Persad
as he waited in line outside the church. The freshman at
Miramar High School came wearing a Taylor jersey.
After the wake, about 2,000 fans gathered for a somber
vigil outside BankUnited Center at the University of Miami,
where the athlete's skills made him an idol. They held white
candles toward the sky as a university band performed the
alma mater. Some said they would emulate him, others said
they would always remember him. Taylor's No. 26 jersey from
the school was framed, along with a photo of him in his
Hurricanes uniform. "Sean is with God now," his father,
Pedro Taylor said. The remembrances came only hours after a
fourth man charged in the shooting death of the 24-year-old
Taylor appeared briefly in court and, like his co-defendants,
was denied bond. Jason Mitchell, 19, appeared via
videoconference in a Fort Myers courtroom, about 100
miles from here. Dressed in an orange jumpsuit, he
responded quietly when asked if he understood the charges.
"He looks like he's in shock," said Sawyer Smith, one of
his attorneys. Three others - Eric Rivera, 17; Charles
Wardlow, 18; and Venjah Hunte, 20 - made their first court
appearance Saturday. All four have been charged with
unpremeditated murder, home invasion with a firearm or
another deadly weapon and armed burglary. They will be
transported to Miami, though authorities haven't said when.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers to perform during halftime of
Super Bowl
Rock 'n' rollers Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers will perform
during halftime of the Super Bowl on Feb. 3 at the University
of Phoenix Stadium. The NFL made the announcement Sunday.
The group has sold more than 50 million records since releasing
its debut album in 1976. Its hits include "Free Fallin',"
"Breakdown," "Refugee," "I Won't Back Down," "Don't Come
Around Here No More," "You Don't Know How It Feels," and
"Runnin' Down A Dream." Petty, an 18-time Grammy nominee with
one of rock 'n' roll's most distinctive voices, has also done
solo work and was a founding member of The Traveling Wilburys,
playing alongside George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and
Jeff Lynne. Recent Super Bowl halftime acts include the Rolling
Stones, Paul McCartney, and Prince. Nearly 140 million TV
viewers in the United States watched Prince last year.
McCown throws three TD passes
Josh McCown had a good game. And if you didn't really notice,
that's fine with him. Another quarterback might have been
bothered if he threw three touchdown passes, his team won a
second consecutive game and the buzz was all about the backup
who played two series. Not McCown. McCown tied a career high
by tossing three scoring passes on a day JaMarcus Russell made
his NFL debut in the Raiders' 34-20 victory over the Denver
Broncos on Sunday at McAfee Coliseum. McCown completed 14 of
21 passes for 141 yards while playing with an injured left
hand that hurt him on handoffs. His right hand, however, was
well, as he connected with Tim Dwight, Jerry Porter and Zach
Miller for touchdowns. He started in place of Daunte Culpepper,
out because of a quadriceps injury, and started fast.
McCown threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Dwight on the opening
series, ending a streak of 36 consecutive games in which the
Raiders did not score a touchdown on their opening drive.
He hit Miller for a 13-yard score to give the Raiders a 14-7
lead upon returning to the game after Russell completed 4 of 7
passes for 56 yards in two series. "It was cool," McCown
said of playing after Russell. "It was great for our team.
It brought us energy. If it helps our team, I'm all for that."
The good feeling permeated the offense, which had only one
penalty and didn't allow a sack. Justin Fargas contributed
146 rushing yards and a touchdown. As an added bonus, the
Raiders' last-ranked rush defense held the Broncos to 86 yards.
