Panthers WR Smith rests again with shin injury
Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith missed his second
successive practice Thursday with a shin injury. The team
provided no further details on the seriousness of the injury.
Smith also sat out practice Wednesday. The injury to
Carolina's top receiver comes as the Panthers are finally
getting healthier at quarterback. Vinny Testaverde and David
Carr both practiced for a second successive day. Coach John
Fox gave no indication who would start Sunday at Green Bay.
Starting safety Deke Cooper also returned to practice after
sitting out Wednesday with a shoulder injury. Running back
DeShaun Foster was back on the field after missing a day with
a sore toe. Defensive tackle Damione Lewis (shoulder) missed
his second successive practice.
Browns LBs back at practice, could play against Ravens
Browns linebackers Willie McGinest, D'Qwell Jackson and Antwan
Peek practiced on a limited basis Thursday, making it possible
the trio could play on Sunday at Baltimore. McGinest
(hamstring), Jackson (ankle) and Peek (knee) were kept
out of practice on Wednesday. McGinest and Peek each played
in last Sunday's loss at Pittsburgh. Jackson, the club's
leading tackler before getting hurt in an Oct. 28 game at
St. Louis, has been sidelined the past two weeks. Andra
Davis and Leon Williams have each played more at inside
linebacker while Jackson recovers. Peek said before
Thursday's workout that he will play against the Ravens (4-5).
The 36-year-old McGinest is eager to atone for what he
called "my worst game as a Cleveland Brown" last week
against the Steelers. McGinest was upset with himself for
failing to tackle quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on a
crucial third-down play in the fourth quarter, when the
Steelers rallied.

Cowboys' Davis sits out practice after injuring ankle
Dallas Cowboys guard Leonard Davis missed practice Thursday,
a day after somebody rolled on his ankle during a workout.
Davis was on the field in shorts and didn't appear to be
limping. After Davis was hurt Wednesday, coach Wade Phillips
said Davis would be checked out by doctors. The coach didn't
know the extent of the injury then, but said it was a good
sign that Davis walked off under his own power. Davis wasn't
in the locker room Thursday when it was open to reporters.
Phillips' daily briefing with reporters was scheduled after
practice. After six disappointing seasons in Arizona, which
made him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2001 draft out of
Texas, Davis signed a seven-year free agent contract worth
nearly $50 million with the Cowboys during the offseason.
That included $18.75 million guaranteed, a team-record $16
million signing bonus and a $2.75 million salary for 2007.
Battered Redskins receiving corps suffers another loss
Washington Redskins receiver Brandon Lloyd will miss the rest
of the season after being placed on injured reserve Thursday.
Lloyd broke his collarbone during practice on Wednesday.
The move ends Lloyd's season and possibly his tenure with the
Redskins. He has only 25 catches with no touchdowns since
Washington traded for him and then signed him to a multiyear
contract last year. He has only two receptions this season
and wasn't allowed to travel to the game against the New York
Jets two weeks ago after missing a team meeting. The Redskins
replaced Lloyd by signing receiver Jimmy Farris, who spent
part of the 2005 season with Washington. He was cut at the
end of the 2006 preseason and was in training camp with
Jacksonville this year. Farris will likely be active for
Sunday's game against Dallas because the Redskins have only
three other healthy receivers: Antwaan Randle El, Keenan
McCardell and Reche Caldwell. Santana Moss is nursing a
heel injury, while James Thrash is recovering from a
severely sprained ankle.
