NASA extends Cassini's Saturn mission
The U.S. space agency announced Tuesday it is extending the
Cassini-Huygens mission -- scheduled to end in July -- by two
years. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said
the spacecraft's stunning discoveries and images of Saturn
have revolutionized our knowledge of that planet and its moons.
The two-year extension will include 60 additional orbits of
Saturn and more flybys of its moons, including 26 flybys of
Titan; seven of Enceladus; and one each of Dione, Rhea and
Helene. NASA said the extension also includes studies of
Saturn's rings, its complex magnetosphere, and the planet
itself. During the extended mission, the spacecraft might come
as close as 15 miles from Enceladus' surface. Based on findings
from Cassini, scientists now think liquid water might be just
beneath the surface of Saturn's moon, Enceladus. That's why
the small moon is one of the highest priority targets for the
extended mission, NASA said. Launched Oct. 15, 1997, Cassini
has been in Saturn's system for nearly four years, completing
62 revolutions around the planet and returning nearly 140,000
images and related data to Earth. The Cassini-Huygens mission
is a cooperative project between NASA, the European Space Agency
and the Italian Space Agency.

Web site makes suing easy
A new Web site promising to simplify the lawsuit process by
pairing lawyers and potential litigants is a bad idea, tort
reform advocates say. Legal Newsline reported Tuesday that
critics say the SueEasy Web site encourages people to be
litigious. Darren McKinney, spokesman for the American Tort
Reform Association, said the site is the "latest distillation"
of an attitude promoted by trial lawyers. "It's an attitude
that runs against personal responsibility and seems to promote
the notion that whatever negative happens in your life somebody
else can be blamed and thus sued," McKinney told Legal Newsline.
On its Web site, Mountain View, Calif.-based SueEasy says its
"primary concern is for you to register a genuine complaint or
grievance as quickly and as simply as possible." Walter Olson,
a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute Center for Legal
Policy, said he worries about the quality of lawyers that might
cull an Internet site for potential clients. "The main problem
with this is quality control," Olson said. "If this were a
dating service, you'd have to wonder -- whichever side of the
dating you were on -- what kind of dunce are they going to
bring me?"

Minimally invasive surgery reduces risks
U.S. medical scientists say a new study shows laparoscopic
surgery reduces the risk of nosocomial infections by 52 percent
when compared with open surgery. Ethicon End-Surgery Inc., a
Johnson & Johnson company, conducted a retrospective study of
more than 11,000 patients undergoing one of three surgical
procedures: hysterectomy, cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
and appendectomy. The researchers said they found laparoscopic
surgery was associated with reduction of the risk of nosocomial
(hospital acquired) infections during gallbladder removal by 66
percent, and during hysterectomy by 52 percent compared with
open surgery. The study showed the reduction rates of
nosocomial infections during laparoscopic appendectomy were
not statistically significant. "This study gives more definitive
evidence that laparoscopic surgery reduces the risk of nosocomial
infection compared to open surgery, which may lead to improved
patient care and potential reductions in costs to the healthcare
system, " said Dr. Andrew Brill, director of minimally invasive
gynecology at the California Pacific Medical Center in San
Francisco, one of the lead investigators of the study.
The research appears in the journal Surgical Endoscopy.
