Vikings DE Udeze has form of leukemia, team awaits tests
Minnesota Vikings defensive end Kenechi Udeze has a form of
leukemia, which is cancer of the blood and bone marrow, a
person with the team confirmed Tuesday. The person spoke on
condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the
information. The Vikings declined to comment, but they
issued a statement from coach Brad Childress that didn't
specifically address Udeze's condition. "We respect the
privacy of Kenechi. The thoughts and prayers of the entire
Minnesota Vikings organization are with Kenechi and his family,"
the statement read. Two Twin Cities television stations first
reported the news on Monday night. KSTP-TV, without citing a
source, reported that the 24-year-old Udeze was undergoing
tests to determine the severity of the disease. Ethan Lock,
Udeze's agent, declined to comment. Without details about
how quickly the cancer was identified or what form of
leukemia Udeze has, there's no way of knowing a prognosis.
Generally, it's a serious disease that can be fatal and takes
a lot of time to fight. The upcoming season is in question
for Udeze, who was drafted out of Southern California in
the first round in 2004. He started 15 games last year
for the Vikings and tied his career high with five sacks.
Goodell will meet with Specter Wednesday to discuss Spygate
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will meet Wednesday with
Sen. Arlen Specter to discuss the Spygate case involving
the New England Patriots. NFL officials say the afternoon
meeting will take place in Specter's office. The Pennsylvania
Republican has asked Goodell to explain his decision to
destroy the tapes and notes from the case. Patriots coach
Bill Belichick was fined $500,000 and the team was fined
$250,000. The Patriots also forfeited a first-round draft
pick.

EA extends contract with NFL to produce video games
Electronic Arts will continue to produce exclusive NFL video
games through the 2012 season after it extended its contracts
with the league and the Players Association. EA will retain
its rights to use NFL teams, stadiums and players in its games,
the company said Tuesday. The agreements provide EA access to
NFL Films and the NFL Network to use in games.
EA produces the Madden NFL line of games.
Booker, Green among 9 players cut by rebuilding Miami Dolphins
Quarterback Trent Green and wide receiver Marty Booker are
among nine players cut by the Miami Dolphins. It's the first
significant step in what's expected to be a massive offseason
roster shakeup by the rebuilding franchise. Other notable cuts
by the Dolphins on Monday include tackle L.J. Shelton and
defensive tackle Keith Traylor. Both played key roles for
Miami this past season, when the Dolphins sputtered to a
franchise-worst 1-15 record. The Dolphins also waived tackle
Anthony Alabi, defensive tackle Anthony Bryant, tackle Marion
Dukes, defensive tackle Marquay Love and tackle Joe Toledo.
This is the first major player purge since Bill Parcells took
over the team's football operations and Tony Sparano was hired
as head coach.

Patriots start work on LB corps, sign veteran T.J. Slaughter
The New England Patriots signed veteran free agent linebacker
T.J. Slaughter on Tuesday. Slaughter played seven seasons in
the NFL, but missed all of last season with a torn tendon in
his left ring finger. He was placed on the injured-reserve
list by the 49ers in November 2006 because of the injury.
He was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round
of the NFL draft in 2000 out of Southern Mississippi. He played
three and a half seasons for the Jaguars and played for Green
Bay, Baltimore, New Orleans and San Francisco.
Redskins' new coach Zorn hires two assistants
Newly hired Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn added John
Palermo to coach the defensive line and Chris Meidt as an
offensive assistant Monday. Palermo spent last season as the
defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Tennessee Tech.
He previously coached at the University of Miami and spent 14
years as an assistant at Wisconsin. His other stops have
included Minnesota, Appalachian State, Memphis State and
Austin Peay, where he was head coach in 1990. Palermo fills
the vacancy created when Greg Blache was promoted as the
defensive coordinator after Gregg Williams was fired last
month during the head coaching search. Meidt has been the
head football coach at Division III St. Olaf for six seasons.
He replaces Bob Saunders, who left the team after his father,
assistant coach Al Saunders, was dismissed along with Williams.
Another offensive assistant, Jack Burns, also won't return.
Zorn, hired as the Redskins' head coach Saturday, still
needs to decide on an offensive coordinator and a running
backs coach.

Pro Bowl draws highest ratings since 2000
The NFL's Pro Bowl drew its best ratings in eight years.
Sunday's game on Fox earned a 6.3 rating and a 12 share. That's
up 37 percent from last year's 4.6. It's the highest Pro Bowl
rating since the game attracted an 8.6 in 2000. The rating is
the percentage of homes with televisions watching a broadcast,
and the share is the percentage watching among those with the
TV on at the time.
Saints re-sign K Gramatica, hire 2 assistant coaches
The New Orleans Saints re-signed kicker Martin Gramatica and
added two new assistant coaches on Tuesday. Gramatica joined the
Saints for the final three games in 2007 and made all five of
his field goal attempts. He will compete in training camp with
Olindo Mare, who struggled for much of the 2007 season before
suffering a season-ending hip injury in December. The Saints
also hired running backs coach Aaron Kromer and assistant
defensive line coach Travis Jones. Kromer has been an offensive
line assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders
for the past seven years. Jones was the defensive line coach and
recruiting coordinator at LSU from 2003-04 before working for the
last three years as a defensive assistant with the Miami Dolphins.
Oldest Super Bowl player, Giants punter Jeff Feagles,
signs 2-year contract
Punter Jeff Feagles has signed a 2-year contract with the NFL
champion New York Giants, a little more than a week after
becoming the oldest player to play in a Super Bowl. Feagles
turns 42 next month, and represented himself in contract talks
with Giants assistant GM Kevin Abrams. Terms of the deal
weren't available, but Feagles made $1 million last year in
the final year of a five-year contract. Feagles spent 20
years in the NFL before making it to the Super Bowl, and he
says he briefly considered retiring after the Giants 17-14
victory over the New England Patriots.
