the World. The height from ground to the tip of the torch 
is 305 feet (93 m); this includes the foundation and the 
pedestal.

The Eiffel Tower was born on March 31, 1889 (hoisting the 
flag to the top), built for the Universal Exhibition in 
celebration of the French Revolution.

The roofs of the Sydney Opera House are constructed of 
1,056,000 glazed white granite tiles, imported from Sweden. 
The Opera House was formally completed in 1973, at a cost 
of $102 million. The original cost estimate in 1957 was $7 
million.

                     Big Ben (Clock Tower)

The clock faces and dials were designed by Augustus Pugin. 
It is an iron framework 23 feet in diameter supporting 312 
pieces of opal glass. At the base of each clock face is 
the Latin inscription 'DOMINE SALVAM FAC REGINAM NOSTRAM 
VICTORIAM PRIMAM' which means 'Lord save our Queen 
Victoria I'.

                      The Gateway Arch 

The Arch stands 630 feet (192 m) tall, and is 630 feet 
(192 m) at its widest point. Its legs are equilateral tri-
angles, narrowing from 54 feet (16.5 m) at the base to 17 
feet (5.2 m) at the top. Each wall consists of a stainless 
steel covering reinforced concrete from ground level to 300 
feet (91 m) or carbon steel and rebar from 300 feet (91 m) 
to the peak.

                         Itaipu Dam 

Five miles wide and requiring enough concrete to build five 
Hoover Dams, the Itaipu Dam spans the Parana River at the 
Brazil/Paraguay border. During its construction, workers 
shifted the course of the seventh largest river in the 
world by removing 50 million tons of earth and rock to dig 
a 1.3-mile bypass.
