I'm convinced that anything can be turned into a theme park
ride.
When I would daydream as a kid, and that happened a lot, I
would sometimes imagine what it would be like to turn
certain aspects of my life into an amusement park
attraction.
The Haunted House of Homework comes to mind. So does the
Asking-that-Cute-Girl-in-Earth-Science-to-the-Dance Roller
Coaster Ride.
Sometimes, I catch myself doing it as an adult.
Anybody want to take a spin on the Amazing Suburban Lawn
Mowing Adventure?
This week's edition includes:
* WHEN RIDES IMITATE ART
* WILD AND WET
* DISNEY UPDATES

WHEN RIDES IMITATE ART
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Turns out I'm not as crazy as that girl in earth science
thought. Who would have thought anyone could turn movies
like "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" (Disneyland) or "The Italian
Job" (Paramount's King's Dominion) into theme park rides?
In taking a look at some of the plans in place for new rides
at American theme parks, I thought it might be a good time
to update you on some new attractions scheduled to open this
year or next.
My source, and a great Website bookmark for anyone who's
into this kind of thing, is ThrillNetwork.com, a news site
for theme parks.
* Like a Led Zeppelin
One of my favorite bands - the makers of the music that
inspired air guitar jams in my parents' basement and made me
drive my mom's station wagon too fast - is the inspiration
for a new roller coaster.
Hard Rock Park, billed as the world's first rock 'n' roll
theme park, won't be open at it's Myrtle Beach, S.C. site
until next year, but it's already heavily promoting Led
Zeppelin - The Ride.
Climbing more than 150 feet into the sky, this looping,
steel roller coaster will feature a high fidelity on-board
audio system that soars to Led Zeppelin's hit single "Whole
Lotta Love." Coooool. I can remember spinning donuts in the
school parking lot to that song. By the way, sorry about
those dents, mom. I guess I do have some idea how they got
there.
Hard Rock Park has worked closely with band members Jimmy
Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones on all aspects of the
ride, including its name, logo, and overall look and feel of
the vehicles. In fact, it was the band that selected "Whole
Lotta Love" as the theme song.
Opening in Spring 2008, Hard Rock Park will be an
approximately 140-acre theme park boasting more than 40
attractions, including roller coasters, shows, children's
play areas, restaurants, cafes and retail stores, a multi-
purpose live music amphitheatre, and ultra-modern sound
system specifically developed for the project.
* Doh! Baaaaaaaart!!!
"The Simpsons" are more than just the longest-running sitcom
on television. They're also the inspiration for a new
attraction at Universal's theme parks.
Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson will ride along
with guests in a new mega-attraction opening at Universal
Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood in Spring
2008. Guests will be rocketed along with the Simpson family
on a hysterical, almost unimaginable adventure.
They'll experience a side of Springfield previously
unexplored as they enjoy the new ride's interpretation of
thrill rides, dark rides and "live" shows that make up a new
fantasy amusement park dreamed up by the show's cantankerous
Krusty the Clown.
Universal's award-winning creative team is collaborating
with The Simpsons Creator and Executive Producer Matt
Groening and Executive Producer James L. Brooks. It will
feature the show's classic humor and many of its instantly
recognizable characters - all voiced by the original actors.
WILD AND WET
* Wheeeee... Blub!
Journey to Atlantis at SeaWorld's San Antonio park will be
the first of its kind in the United States when it opens
later this month.
This family ride soars nearly 100 feet in the air, with a
camelback and a twist. Riders will enjoy a portion of the
ride backwards. Journey to Atlantis riders travel uphill,
then the boats spin up to 360 degrees at the top of the
first plateau.
After the initial spin, boats are propelled backwards down
a reverse camelback. At the crest of the second hill, the
boats rotate again before plunging down the final hill and
splashing through a wall of water and into a lake.
* Bottomless at Busch
Two years ago, Busch Gardens Africa introduced the world to
a one-of-a-kind experience: a coaster that took riders 200
feet up, then 90 degrees straight down. Apparently, that was
just the beginning.
On June 16, the adventure park will reintroduce SheiKra to
the world with a new twist. They're removing the floors from
the cars to allow riders an unobstructed view of the 70 mph
rush.
SheiKra was America's first dive coaster. It included first
-of-a-kind elements like a true 90-degree drop, an Immelmann
loop and a second vertical dive into an underground tunnel.
All that stuff's still there. Psychologically, though, the
effect of the floorless cars is expected to be intense.
SheiKra s cars will continue to seat eight passengers
across, three rows deep, but riders will no longer be able
to brace themselves for Florida's No. 1 thrill ride against
the floor of the car. With the front rail gone, passengers
will be completely exposed as they come over the crest of
SheiKra s signature 200-foot, straight-down plunge.
The last day to experience SheiKra in its current form will
be Memorial Day, May 28. The next day, the coaster will
close for approximately three weeks for the floorless
conversion. Existing seats and shoulder harnesses will be
fitted into a new chassis that support only the chairs above
and the wheels below. Between each row of seats will be
nothing but open air.
DISNEY UPDATES
* Nemo not a captain; toys in the desert
The "Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage" will arrive in
Disneyland's Tomorrowland on June 11, combining another
classic Disney attraction - the outdated Submarine Voyage
which debuted in 1959 – with new special effects and
storytelling techniques.
The submarine ride inspired by the classic, but generations
-old "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", will be re-fitted with
new Audio-Animatronics characters, all new sets, and
innovative imaging technology. Submarine voyagers will now
observe an underwater volcano, and encounter Nemo and other
characters from the Disney-Pixar film "Finding Nemo".
Disney-Pixar characters will also appear in a new Disney's
California Adventure attraction, scheduled to open in 2008.
Construction has already begun on "Toy Story Mania!" in the
Paradise Pier district of the park. It will mark the first
time an attraction has been designed and built
simultaneously at Disneyland Resort and at Walt Disney
World. At Disney World, "Toy Story Mania!" will open at the
Disney-MGM Studios. The attraction will have a 2008 opening
at both the California and Florida parks.
Guests of all ages will don 3-D glasses and hop into
fancifully decorated vehicles. While riding along a
colorful, midway-themed route, they will shoot at animated
targets using their own "toy cannons," scoring points in a
series of gaming sequences featuring Woody, Bo Peep and the
rest of the gang from Toy Story.
