Jealous?
Just because you're middle-aged and responsible doesn't
mean you can't go Trick or Treating.
You just bring a suitcase instead of a goodie bag.

HAUNTED HALLOWEEN TRAVEL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Believe it or not, there are many types of Halloween
travel.
First, Bed & Breakfasts all over the country suddenly start
acknowledging that the owners think they're haunted. Often,
they are in historic areas filled with ghost stories, or
towns filled with local events like Halloween parades, ghost
walks or haunted hayrides.
Second, there are places in the world with a reputation.
Some are the alleged landing sites of visitors from another
planet. Others are near allegedly monster-infested lakes or
Sasquatch-friendly forests. Still others are in places
linked - by fact or fiction - to spooky events. Visits to
these locations are often undertaken by serious "ghost-
busters" who hope to catch a few orbs with their digital
cameras.
Third, there are the theme parks and seasonal haunted houses
- some of which go to incredible, Hollywood-worthy lengths
to impress visitors.
So, which kind of Halloween traveler are you? Here are some
hints on where to go on the 31st, regardless of your
preference. Kudos to About.Com for helping me pull the
information needed for this newsletter.
Let's start with a sampling of the B&Bs:
* What could be more appropriate for Halloween Adventurers
raised on "Friday the 13th" movies than the actual home of
America's most famous acquitted killer (No, not O.J.) -
Lizzie Borden.
The Lizzie Borden B&B (http://www.lizzie-borden.com) lets
you spend the night in the Victorian Home in Fall River,
Mass., where Lizzie allegedly chopped up her family with an
axe. A couple of the victims are reportedly still hanging
around, so bring that digital camera.
* Green Mountain Inn, Vermont
(http://www.greenmountaininn.com) is offering Ghoulish
Getaway from Oct. 20 to 31. It includes two nights and two
breakfasts, a "choose your own" pumpkin from a nearby farm,
and a special night on Friday Oct. 27 featuring Joseph A.
Citro, author of "Green Mountain Ghosts, Ghouls and Unsolved
Mysteries". Guests will carry lanterns through the streets
of the historic village, hearing stories about Stowe's own
ghosts.
* The Charleston Battery Carriage House Inn
(http://www.batterycarriagehouse.com) bills itself as
Charleston, S.C.'s most haunted inn. It's Ghost Adventure
package includes two nights in a potentially haunted room,
an evening ghost walking tour, a copy of the book, "Ghosts
of Charleston," a tour of the haunted Aiken-Rhett house, and
a bottle of champagne.
To find a B&B that might give you the heebie jeebies,
Search", then "Choose Special Packages", then "Halloween
Happenings".
HOT AND COLD RUNNING GHOSTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If your looking for a wider range of Halloween
possibilities, go to HauntFinder.Com
(http://www.hauntfinder.com/), plug in a state, and get a
list of ghost walks, corn mazes, haunted houses and other
events. The happenings are generally marked when they're
too scary for the kids.
* The poster child for Halloween destinations with
historically haunted links is the town of Salem, Mass.,
notorious for hanging suspected witches and inspiring "The
Crucible".
This burg has its own Halloween Website
(http://www.salemweb.com) From now until Oct. 31, the place
is filled with parades, psychic fairs, costume balls and
tours of allegedly haunted houses and historic sites. Salem
has half a dozen different ghost walks, including one that
highlights witchcraft and one through the second-oldest
cemetery in the country.
* If you're up for crossing the Atlantic, Europe's got
centuries and centuries worth of ghosts. And Scotland, for
some reason, seems to have more than its share. Edinburgh
especially.
A forgotten city lies beneath Edinburgh's South Bridge - an
underground maze of chambers and tunnels where thousands of
people are thought to have lived in darkness. Many of them
are said to live there still. Go to Mercat Tours
(http://www.mercattours.com) for details.
* Halloween is also a good time to visit the UFO capital of
the world, Roswell, New Mexico.
Yeah, the actual legend of a crashed alien spaceship and
government cover-up have been overtaken by kitsch and
consumerism. But it's fun. There's an official UFO museum,
tours of the alleged crash site, and - of course -
restaurants, motels and gift shops all trying to make a
buck off the town's dubious claim to fame.

ROLLER GHOSTERS AND MONSTER MIDWAYS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Theme parks offer a wide variety of spooky fun. The
standards like Universal Studios and Disney pull out all
the stops, while special, made-for-the-holiday haunted
houses, hayrides and mazes seem to pop up like mushrooms
as the holiday draws near.
Here are some of the ones you probably haven't thought of:
* Shocktoberfest. This 30-acre haunted theme park in an
abandoned industrial park just outside of Reading, Penn.
(a short drive from Philadelphia) is seriously scary. It
includes Prison of the Dead - a 50,000-square-foot indoor
and outdoor special effects experience - to the Monster
Midway and the Biohazard Haunted Hayride. Check out its
Website at (http://www.shocktoberfest.com)
* Universal Studios. Halloween Horror is intended for teens
and is definitely too scary for children. It features seven
haunted houses, several scare zones and incredible special
effects. Check the website for details
(http://www.halloweenhorrornights.com)
* Hershey Park in the Dark. Chocolate Town USA goes all out
for Halloween. Events in October include Hersheypark in the
Dark and Hershey's Trick-or-Treat Adventure. Talk about the
best place in he world to score Halloween candy. Grownups
can also get some post-Halloween chills at A Chilling Day
with Poe on Nov. 4. About.com has a page devoted to it at
http://travelwithkids.about.com/b/a/037298.htm.
Well, that's it for this week, group. Thanks again for
