Make The Most Of Your Vacation - From Coast to Coast!
Greetings Getaway Lover,
We're off to the rolling hills of Vermont.....
Vermont is an entire state of hidden treasures. Highways
are not marred with billboards, and on some roads, cows
still stop traffic twice a day, en route to and from the
pasture. In spring, sap boils in sugarhouses, some built
generations ago. Yet up the road, a chef trained at the
New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier might use
the maple syrup to glaze a pork tenderloin.
It's the landscape that attracts people to Vermont. The
rolling hills belie the rugged terrain underneath the
green canopy of forest growth. During the heyday of the
wool industry in the mid-1800s, sheep farming denuded 85%
of the landscape. With railroads opening up the West after
the Civil War, farming moved to the more profitable plain
states, and the landscape began reclaiming itself.
Happy Trails,
Jan

--DESTINATION: Vermont
Tourism is one of the state's main economic engines. In
winter, Vermont's 16 ski resorts are the prime attraction.
In summer, clear lakes and streams provide ample opportun-
ities for swimming, boating, and fishing; the hills attract
hikers and mountain bikers. The more than 14,000 square
miles of roads are great for road biking. In fall, the
leaves have their last hurrah, painting the mountainsides
a stunning array of yellow, gold, red, and orange. The only
time things really slow down is during "mud" season --
otherwise known as late fall and spring. Even innkeepers
have been known to tell guests to come another time.

for their social and environmental consciousness, the

land. The tour only skims the surface of the behind-the-
scenes goings-on at the plant -- a flaw forgiven when
the free samples are dished out. www.benjerry.com. COST:

Welcoming guests since 1850, this classic redbrick inn in
downtown Stowe has all the amenities of a resort, like an
outdoor heated pool open year-round. But the rooms in the
main inn and annex still feel like a country inn, with
Early American décor. Two new buildings have luxury rooms,
suites, and town houses. The Whip Bar & Grill ($$-$$$)
puts an interesting twist to comfort food, such as cheddar-
cheese-and-apple-stuffed chicken. www.greenmountaininn.com.

--WHERE TO DINE:
American Flatbread
Italian, $8 to $20, Waitsfield
For ideologically and gastronomically sound pizza, you
won't find a better place in the Green Mountains than
this modest haven between Waitsfield and Warren. Organic
flour and produce fuel mind and body, and Vermont hardwood
fuels the earth-and-stone oven. The "punctuated equilibrium
flat bread," made with olive-pepper goat cheese and rosemary,
is a dream, as are more traditional pizzas. It's open Monday-
Thursday 7:30 AM-8 PM for takeout, Friday and Saturday
5:30-9:30 for dinner. Reservations not accepted. MC, V.
Closed Sun.
Address: Rte. 100, Waitsfield, VT, USA
Phone: 802/496-8856
Bear Creek Mountain Club
Contemporary, $12 to $28, Ludlow
A private ski club by day, the elegant clubhouse with
mahogany doors and marble counters opens to the public
at night for dinner. A cathedral ceiling in the upstairs
dining room gives an open, airy feel. The menu features
such creations as cannelloni stuffed with butternut squash
and grilled gingered pork tenderloin. Ski it off the next
day with a $75 guest pass. MC, V. Closed Mon.-Wed. No lunch.
Address: Rte. 100, 9 mi north of Ludlow, Plymouth, VT, USA
Phone: 802/672-4242
Chef's Table
Contemporary, $12 to $28, Montpelier
Nearly everyone working here is a student at the New
England Culinary Institute. Although this is a training
ground, the quality and inventiveness are anything but
beginner's luck. The menu changes daily. Dining is more
formal than that of the sister operation downstairs, the
Main Street Bar and Grill (open daily for lunch and dinner).
A 15% gratuity is added to the bill. AE, D, DC, MC, V.
Closed Sun. No lunch Sat.
Address: 118 Main St., Montpelier, VT, USA
Phone: 802/229-9202; 802/223-3188 grill
