       WEEKEND GETAWAYS - Friday, July 20, 2007
Make The Most Of Your Vacation - From Coast to Coast!

Greetings Getaway Lover,

This Weekend We're Off to Palm Springs.....

A tourist destination since the late 19th century, Palm
Springs had already caught Hollywood's eye by the time
of the Great Depression. It was an ideal hideaway:
celebrities could slip into town, play a few sets of
tennis, lounge around the pool, attend a party or two,
and, unless things got out of hand, remain safely beyond
the reach of gossip columnists. But it took a pair of
tennis-playing celebrities to put Palm Springs on the map.
In the 1930s actors Charlie Farrell and Ralph Bellamy
bought 200 acres of land for $30 an acre and opened the
Palm Springs Racquet Club, which soon listed Ginger Rogers,
Humphrey Bogart, and Clark Gable among its members.

Happy Trails,
Jan

--DESTINATION: Palm, Springs

During its slow, steady growth period from the 1930s to
1970s, the Palm Springs area drew some of the world's
most famous architects to design homes for the rich and
famous. The collected works, inspired by the mountains
and desert sands and notable for the use of glass and
indoor/outdoor space, became known as Palm Springs
Modernism. The city lost some of its luster in the 1970s
as the wealthy moved to newer down-valley communities.
But Palm Springs reinvented itself, restoring the bright
and airy old houses and hotels, and cultivating a welcom-
ing atmosphere for well-heeled gay visitors. You'll find
reminders of the city's glamorous past in its unique
architecture and renovated hotels, and change and progress
are evidenced by trendy restaurants and upscale shops.
Formerly exclusive Palm Canyon Drive is now a lively
avenue with coffeehouses, outdoor cafés and bars, and
frequent special events.

The towns of Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms punctuate
Twentynine Palms Highway (Highway 62), the northern
highway from the desert resorts to Joshua Tree National
Park, and provide lodging and other visitor services to
park goers. Flanked by Twentynine Palms Highway on the
north and I-10 on the south, the park protects some of
the southern desert's most interesting and beautiful
scenery. A visit to the park provides a glimpse of the
rigors of desert life in the Little San Bernardino
Mountains. You can see the park highlights in a half
day or take a daylong expedition into the backcountry

--WHERE TO SLEEP:

29 Palms Inn
Under $90 to $175, Twentynine Palms

The funky 29 Palms, on the Oasis of Mara, is the lodging
closest to the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.
The collection of adobe and wood-frame cottages is
scattered over 70 acres of grounds that are popular with
birds and bird-watchers year-round. Innkeeper Jane Smith's
warm, personal service more than makes up for the cottages'
rustic qualities. Ranging from pasta to seafood, the con-
temporary fare at the inn's restaurant ($-$$) is more
sophisticated than its Old West appearance might suggest.
www.29palmsinn.com. 18 rooms, 5 suites. Restaurant, pool,
hot tub, some pets allowed (fee); no a/c, no room phones,
no smoking. AE, D, DC, MC, V. Continental breakfast.

Address: 73-950 Inn Ave., Twentynine Palms, CA, USA

Barbara Worth Golf Resort and Convention Center
Under $90 to $120, El Centro

Taking its name from the 1911 Harold Bell Wright book
The Winning of Barbara Worth, about turning the desert
into farmland by irrigation, this resort is a green
spot in the desert. Low-lying buildings overlooking the
golf course house pleasant rooms with exterior entrances.
The dining room ($-$$$) has a Polynesian look, but the
kitchen is American. Evenings at the karaoke bar can be
lively. www.bwresort.com. 104 rooms. Restaurant, room
service, some in-room safes, microwaves, refrigerators,
cable TV, in-room data ports, driving range, 18-hole
golf course, putting green, 2 pools, gym, hot tub,
lounge, meeting rooms, no-smoking rooms. AE, D, DC, MC,
V.

Address: 2050 Country Club Dr., Holtville, CA, USA
Phone: 760/356-2806 or 800/356-3806
Fax: 760/356-4653

Borrego Springs Resort and Country Club
$90 to $175, Borrego Springs

This quiet resort offers good value when compared with
other Borrego Springs lodgings. Large rooms in a
collection of two-story buildings surrounding the swim-
ming pool are nicely kept and appointed with simple oak
furnishings. All have shaded balconies or patios. In
spring desert gardens surrounding the property show a
colorful bloom. The Borrego Springs Country Club
restaurant on-site is open daily except Monday for lunch
and dinner. www.borregospringsresort.com. 66 rooms, 34
suites. Restaurant, some kitchenettes, microwaves,
refrigerators, cable TV, in-room data ports, 3 9-hole
golf courses, putting green, 6 tennis courts, 2 pools,
gym, outdoor hot tub, bar, meeting room, free parking,
some pets allowed (fee), no-smoking rooms. AE, D, MC, V.

--WHERE TO DINE:

Arnold Palmer's
American/Casual, $16 to Over $30, La Quinta

From the photos on the walls to the trophy-filled display
cases to the putting green for diners awaiting a table,
Arnie's image fills this restaurant, surrounded by verdant
greens and colorful gardens. The menu lists an array of
steaks and chops, including an 18-ounce cowboy bone-in rib
eye and barbecued baby back ribs. A few seafood dishes,
including lobster macaroni with white cheddar, round out
the selections. Reservations essential. AE, MC, V. No
lunch.

Big Fish Grille & Oyster Bar
Seafood, $16 to $30, Palm Desert

There are several simply furnished rooms separated by
large aquariums and a patio dining area. AE, D, MC, V. No
