--DESTINATION:
Greater New Orleans
In the Southeast corner of Louisiana, at the toe of the
pirate's boot, lies the Greater New Orleans region and
the city of New Orleans -- undoubtedly one of the most
talked about, sung about and written about cities in
the western world. This is not a place you simply visit,
this is place you fall in love with. And what a love
affair it is!
Cajun Country
Stretching across the Gulf of Mexico and up into South
Central Louisiana, is the region known as Cajun Country.
Here, along the breathtaking bayous, the first French
Canadians settled in and forever changed the landscape
and culture of our state. Resourceful, stoic and
inventive, these were the people who turned soup into
gumbo, washboards into musical instruments, and made
the swamp a mystical paradise.
Plantation Country
The history of Louisiana truly comes to life in Planta-
tion Country, located in the Southeastern region of the
state. Come wind your way across the Atchafalaya Basin,
through the rolling hills of St. Francisville and along
the Great River Road that begins just west of New
Orleans as you travel back to the 1800's. Throughout
this area there are famous, sprawling antebellum planta-
tions that offer tours of the property, gardens and
homes.
Crossroads
Crossroads aptly gets its name by being at the cross-
roads of two of the most historic trails in Louisiana-
the El Camino Real and the Natchez Trace; thus, giving
visitors a taste of all things Louisiana -- not the
least of which is our famous Southern Hospitality. For
a sample, you'll want to visit Natchitoches, the
inspiration for the movie and play Steel Magnolias,
where the women had big hair and even bigger hearts.
Home to the author, Robert Harling, it is also home to
some of the South's most charming bed and breakfast
inns.
Sportsman's Paradise
Thick, piney woods that flourish with wildlife. Lush
rolling hills. Clear, sparkling lakes abundant with
bass and trout. Mysterious bayous fingering from the
rivers. This is Northern Louisiana. Sportsman's
Paradise - and heaven for birdwatchers, nature
photographers, campers and anyone who has ever pulled
a 16 pound bass out of Caney Lake.

--WHERE TO SLEEP:
YOUR PALACE AWAITS YOUR Accommodations Itineraries Night-
life Outdoors Shopping No matter what you plan to do
here, the sights, sounds and flavors of Louisiana are
best experienced after a good night's sleep. Louisiana's
accommodations include elegant, historic hotels, modern
luxury resorts, charming bed and breakfasts, stately
plantations, and majestic campgrounds. Read up about the
best places to stay in Louisiana. Then search for the
perfect choice, along with special deals and packages.
Greater New Orleans
Whether you want to stay in the French Quarter, the
Garden District, or any other area of the city, in a
fine hotel, bed & breakfast or budget accommodations,
you'll find a great place to stay in New Orleans.
Consider the French Quarter's Hotel Monteleone, with
its opulent revolving bar fashioned after a carousel,
or the historic Creole Gardens Bed & Breakfast in the
Garden District.
Cajun Country
Stay at Chretien Point Plantation, in Sunset, where a
marauding pirate was shot on the staircase by the
mistress of the house. (Some say his ghost is still
there.) You may recognize the home's grand staircase -
it was reproduced for Tara in Gone With The Wind.
Antebellum B&Bs abound in Cajun Country, but you also
have your choice of other great accommodations - from
campgrounds to casino hotels.
Plantation Country
It's called Plantation Country for a reason. In this
area, you can tour some of the nation's most famous
plantations, including Oak Alley Plantation, Destrehan
Plantation and Nottoway Plantation. Many of them also
offer over night stays, including The Myrtles, which,
by the way, has been called "the most haunted house
in America."
Crossroads
Hang your hat at one of many charming and cozy bed and
breakfasts in Historic Downtown Natchitoches. If you're
visiting Alexandria, you can have a peaceful night's
rest at one of our luxurious hotels or charming bed &
breakfasts. Or pitch your tent in the 800,000 beautiful
acres of Kisatchie, Louisiana's only national forest.
No matter where you visit in the Crossroads region, you
can find a place to stay that meets your expectations
and your budget.
Sportsman's Paradise
If you're in the twin cities of Shreveport and Bossier
City, chances are you'll be trying your luck at one of
the area's many casinos. The casinos of Sportsman's
Paradise don't just offer a chance to hit it big, they
also offer a great place to stay at a good price. But
that's not all the region has to offer the weary
traveler. You'll find luxury hotels, quaint B&Bs,
picturesque campgrounds, budget hotels and more.
--WHERE TO DINE:
HAVE A MEAL FIT FOR A KINGFISHRestaurants Louisiana Food
Products Louisiana knows how to serve up a good time,
especially at the table. From Creole to Cajun dishes,
soul food to seafood, Oysters Rockefeller to oyster po-
boys, the menu is as culturally diverse as this legendary
state.
Greater New Orleans
Start your day with beignets and café au lait in the
French Quarter at Café du Monde. Later, savor an
exquisitely prepared meal at one of the city’s world-
renowned restaurants—among them Galatoire’s, Brennan’s
and Emeril’s—some of which are helmed by celebrity
chefs. Culinary favorites include red beans and rice,
grillades and grits, po-boys and, for dessert, bread
pudding, pralines or bread pudding with praline sauce!
Cajun Country
Richly flavored soups and stews, such as étouffée and
gumbo, are a signature of Cajun cooking. Crawfish, a
Cajun Country trademark, is ubiquitous on both formal
and informal menus, whether fried, boiled, sautéed or
etoufféed.
Plantation Country
The grand plantation homes along Great River Road now
have restaurants that serve “old south” cuisine,
including Poplar Grove in Port Allen, where guests can
enjoy private dining and gospel choirs. Baton Rouge has
many fine restaurants, inspired by the cuisine of New
Orleans, an hour and a half away. Be sure to try such
Louisiana favorites as jambalaya or barbecue shrimp.
Lafitte’s Landing at Bittersweet Plantation features
indigenous menu items cooked to perfection by John Folse,
one of Louisiana’s most famous chefs.
Crossroads
This is the place to indulge in authentic Southern
country cooking —down-home delicacies like fried chicken,
barbecue and cornbread are exceptional. No tasting tour
is complete without two of the region’s most famous
dishes: Natchitoches meat pie and Lasyone’s Cane River
Cream Pie.
Sportsman's Paradise
All of the pristine lakes in the region yield a bounty
of delicious freshwater fish. Dine on Cajun catfish at
Franklin Parish’s celebration of the whiskered swimmer.
For dessert, mouthwatering peach pie and cobbler are
served year-round. Monroe, the home of the Joseph
Biederham Museum and Gardens, whose namesake was one
of the first bottlers of Coca-Cola, is a must-stop for
the area’s unusual and delicious Coca-Cola cake.
