Ex-Bear, Buckeye Spellman arrested after Tulsa police pursuit
Former NFL player Alonzo Spellman was arrested after Tulsa
police fired pepper-spray pellets into his car following a
nearly 20-minute pursuit. Spellman was booked into the Tulsa
County Jail on complaints of eluding, assault with a deadly
weapon on a police officer, resisting arrest and driving
without a license, jail records show. His bond was set at
$10,700 and Spellman remained jailed early Tuesday evening.
The chase began at 12:23 p.m. after officers responded to
a disturbance at a convenience store in midtown Tulsa, Ashley
said. When officers arrived, Spellman got into a green Chrysler
Pacifica and drove away, Ashley said. "He took us on a little
pursuit through the city," Ashley said. "We had to use stop
sticks that took out three of his tires." After the vehicle
stopped, the 36-year-old Spellman refused to get out of the
car for about 20 minutes until officers fired "pepper bullets"
through the windows. Ashley said he's unaware of Spellman's
ties to the Tulsa community or whether he has an attorney.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Spellman was a first-round draft
choice out of Ohio State for the Chicago Bears in 1992. He
played nine seasons in the NFL for the Bears, Detroit Lions
and Dallas Cowboys, recording 43 sacks in 123 games and
leading the Bears with eight sacks during the 1996 season.
Spellman has a history of treatment for mental illness and
was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation after his involvement
in a standoff with police at the home of his publicist in 1998.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty
in 2003 to interfering with the crew of a Delta Air Lines
flight from Cincinnati to Philadelphia. Prosecutors said
Spellman cursed and shouted for the duration of the
July 23, 2002, flight, made crude comments to female
passengers, threatened to open a cabin door and threatened
the pilot. Spellman was ordered to spend three months in a
rehabilitation center upon his release and to undergo
psychological counseling. In October 2005, Spellman agreed
to a contract with the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena
Football League.
Dallas Cowboys LB Ellis added to Pro Bowl
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis on Tuesday was added
to the NFC Pro Bowl roster, giving the team an NFL-record 13
selections for the game. This will be the first Pro Bowl
appearance for Ellis, who is an injury replacement for
Chicago's Lance Briggs. The game will be played Feb. 10
in Honolulu. Ellis started the last 11 games for the Cowboys
in 2007 after suffering a ruptured Achilles' tendon at Arizona
in November 2006, causing him to miss all of training camp and
the first three regular-season games in '07. Ellis finished
the year with a career-high 12 1/2 sacks -- good for second
on the team behind DeMarcus Ware (14), second among league
linebackers and sixth overall. Ellis added 13 quarterback
pressures to finish third on the team. Ellis joins 12
teammates previously named to the Pro Bowl -- for a team
and NFL record 13 selection.

Bills bolster TE ranks by signing Teyo Johnson
Tight end Teyo Johnson signed with the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday,
attempting a comeback after missing all of last season with an
injury. Selected by Oakland in the second round of the 2003
draft, Johnson has three years' NFL experience but has not
played since being released by Arizona during the 2005 season.
He has 26 catches for 288 yards and three touchdowns in 30 games.
Johnson hurt his calf and was released by Denver in August after
reaching an injury settlement with the team. The Bills are
depleted at tight end, with two returning players under
contract: starter Robert Royal and Derek Schouman, the
second of Buffalo's two seventh-round draft picks last year.
Madison dumped by Dolphins, but good enough for Giants
Sam Madison went from bad to super, and he keeps the evidence
to remind him of where he has been. The cornerback was dumped
by the Dolphins in March of 2006 after nine seasons with Miami,
then was picked up by the New York Giants. Two seasons later,
he's in the Super Bowl. "Miami let me go, so what?" he said
at media day on Tuesday. "They let a lot of people go that go
out and continue to be successful. I'm just one of the guys."
Despite some injury problems, Madison has four interceptions
this season."When you are let go, you always get a sheet of
paper letting you know why they are letting you go and they
just didn't think you are good enough," Madison said. "It's
fun right now." He still has that paper. "I put it in my
scrapbook and when you get that paper you look at it and
say, `Really, I understand,"' Madison said. "It makes you
want to go out and work harder and that is what I did."
As bad as they are, he said he still would like to play for
the Dolphins again because they were the team that drafted
him. "It"s a business," Madison said. "You have to let things
go and you just have to go on and continue to do the things
you can do and try to help the younger guys because the guys
helped me when I was growing up."
