Redskins safety Sean Taylor dies a day after being shot
Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died early Tuesday, a
day after the Pro Bowl player was shot at home by what police
say was an intruder. He was 24. Family friend Richard Sharpstein
said Taylor's father told him the news around 5:30 a.m. "His
father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and
thanked me," said Sharpstein, Taylor's former lawyer. "It's a
tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful,
humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of
him. Obviously God had other plans." Taylor died at Jackson
Memorial Hospital, where he had been airlifted after the shooting
early Monday, Sharpstein said. Two carloads of mourners,
including Taylor's father, arrived at the house Tuesday morning.
They remained inside and did not speak to reporters. A single
bouquet of flowers was left by a palm tree just outside a front
gate. Beside the mailbox, an untouched newspaper lay with news
of Taylor's shooting. Doctors had been encouraged late Monday
when Taylor squeezed a nurse's hand, according to Vinny Cerrato,
the Redskins' vice president of football operations. But Sharpstein
said he was told Taylor never regained consciousness after being
transported to the hospital and that he wasn't sure how he had
squeezed the nurse's hand. "Maybe he was trying to say goodbye
or something," Sharpstein said. Taylor, the fifth overall pick
in the 2004 NFL draft following an All-American season at the
University of Miami, was shot early Monday in the upper leg,
damaging an artery and causing significant blood loss.
Benson to have season-ending surgery on leg injury
Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson will miss the
remainder of the season with an injury to his lower left leg
that will require surgery "A tough break," Bears coach Lovie
Smith said Monday. "We'll miss him." Smith would not disclose
what Benson's injury was, only to say it was season-ending and
needed surgery. Benson, who took over this season as the Bears'
starting tailback after the trade of Thomas Jones to the New York
Jets, broke free for a 21-yard run in Sunday's game against the
Denver Broncos. But he was injured as he landed while being tackled
by Denver safety Hamza Abdullah and later had to be carted off the
field following the second-quarter play. Chicago, buoyed by two
kick return touchdowns from Devin Hester, rallied to win the
game 37-34 in overtime. The Bears' first-round pick in 2005 out
of Texas, Benson has been slowed by injuries during his first
three seasons. A lengthy contract negotiation caused Benson to
miss his first training camp two years ago, and a knee injury
suffered against San Francisco knocked him out of six games
that season. In 2006, Benson sprained his shoulder during
training camp and missed the preseason. And then he was
knocked out of the Super Bowl in the first quarter after
spraining his left knee. Veteran Adrian Peterson will move in
as the starter, with Garrett Wolfe as the backup.

Peterson could return for Vikings against Lions on Sunday
Minnesota Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson is on
track to return to the field this week, just in time for a
pivotal NFC North game against Detroit. Peterson tore the
lateral collateral ligament in his right knee three weeks
ago against Green Bay. He missed the past two victories over
Oakland and the Giants, but the star rookie had an MRI exam
Monday that "shows excellent healing," coach Brad Childress
said. As long as everything goes as planned this week in
practice, Childress said he would ease Peterson back against
the Lions, splitting carries with veteran Chester Taylor.
Despite missing the past two games, Peterson still leads the
NFL with 1,081 yards rushing and is second to Philadelphia's
Brian Westbrook with 1,301 yards from scrimmage. The Vikings
(5-6) have won three of their past four games to creep back
into the playoff picture in the muddled NFC. Detroit (6-5)
has lost three in a row after starting the season 6-2.
