Saturn's moon Rhea may have rings

U.S. scientists said NASA's Cassini spacecraft has detected
what appears to be a ring surrounding Rhea, one of Saturn's
largest moons. It is the first time rings may have been found
around a moon, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
said Thursday in a release. Rhea, which is about 950 miles in
diameter, is Saturn's second-largest moon. "Until now, only
planets were known to have rings, but now Rhea seems to have
some family ties to its ringed parent Saturn," Cassini scientist
Geraint Jones said in a report published in the journal Science.
NASA said Cassini detected an apparent debris disk that measured
several thousand miles from end to end. Researchers said the
particles that make up the disk probably range from the size
of small pebbles to boulders.

	   Scientists investigate dolphin deaths

Researchers in Virginia are attempting to determine why seven
dolphins have beached themselves on the state's shores in the
past week. One of the dolphins was dissected Wednesday by
scientists searching for answers to the unexplained phenomenon,
the Virginian Pilot reported Thursday. Rescuers were unable
to save any of the dolphins. Experts said it was previously
a rare occurrence for a dolphin to become beached in Virginia.
"Up until now, mass strandings of any kind have been unusual
in Virginia," said Sue Barco, a senior research scientist on
the stranding team at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science
Center. "Delphinus (dolphins), in the past couple years, seem
to have been showing up in odd places at odd times."
Tissue samples from the necropsy are being analyzed.

Doctors use brain scans, ''read minds'

U.S. scientists said researchers may soon be able to use brain-
scanning instruments to read someone's mind. Dr. Jack
Gallant, a neuroscientist at the University of California
in Berkeley, said his team has figured out how to use
functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to tell what
someone is looking at based on brain activity. A report,
published online in the journal Nature, said it is the first
step to being able to see the contents of someone's visual
experiences. "When the deck of cards, or photographs, has
about 120 images, we can do better than 90 percent correct,"
Gallant said. He said the next step is to interpret what
someone is seeing without having the subject select from
known images. The research team said a device that can read
out the brain's activity could be used to assess damage from
strokes, the effect of drug treatments or to help diagnose
conditions such as dementia.
