United States authorities say they have broken up a
marriage-for-money scam that involved American sailors and
Eastern European women seeking citizenship.
Court documents show that the sailors based at the Naval
Station in Norfolk, Va., would meet the women in bars and
restaurants and in some instances would marry them several
hours later, CNN reported Friday.
The case has resulted in the arrests of 33 couples in eight
states including New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia and
California, CNN said.
Agents with the Naval Criminal Investigation Service
estimate the scheme cost the Navy about $500,000 in housing
allowances should not have received.
Most of the women involved were from Russia or Ukraine and
had arrived in the United States on work or student visas.
Marriage put them on a fast-track to U.S. citizenship.
Special agent Samuel Worth of the investigation service
said some of the women received military identification
cards, exposing a security vulnerability.
What are your thoughts on marriage-for-money schemes?

School seeks to drop witch logo
A school in the village that carried out England's last
hangings for witchcraft, when it was still a crime, has
announced it will do away with its witch emblem.
Administrators at Warboys Community Primary School, which
has used the image of a witch riding a broomstick as its
logo for more than 60 years, announced their intentions
after the school received poor marks on a recent inspection,
The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday. The school is
located in the town of Warboys, where England's last
witchcraft executions took place in 1593. "The school is
aware that some parents choose not to send their children
to Warboys and cite the witch as one of the reasons why,"
the school said in a statement. "It is also known that some
potential teachers and head teachers have cited the witch
logo as a reason not to apply for posts." However, parents
and local officials said the logo is not the root of the
school's problem. "I can't believe that the people who
are responsible for our children's education are so
blinkered," said Parish Councilor Sally Pryke. "Parents
said they would rather money was spent on the children's
education, school books and equipment than replacing the
logo."

Grandmother arrested after airport scuffle
A 74-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly fighting
with authorities at a Palm Beach, Fla., airport, law
enforcement reports said. A Palm Beach County sheriff's
probable cause affidavit said Elena Reichman, 74, argued
with Transportation Security Administration workers at Palm
Beach International Airport and refused to go through
screening, the Palm Beach Post reported. "Reichman was
arguing with TSA personnel and demanded she be allowed to
proceed down the concourse without interruption," the
report said. The report said Reichman pushed sheriff's
Deputy Margaret Picerno after she was asked by the deputy
to calm down and lower her voice. Picerno responded by
sitting Reichman in a chair and putting her in handcuffs.
Reichman was taken to a local hospital after she claimed
to be suffering from an illness and was then taken to Palm
Beach County Jail, where booking officials said she was
released on $3,000 bond.

Research: Intellect linked to rhythm
Swedish scientists seeking to dispel myths about supposedly
dumb drummers say their research indicates that those with
high intelligence keep the best rhythm. Professor Frederic
Ullen of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm and Guy
Madison of Sweden's Umea University said they submitted
34 right-handed men between ages 19 and 49 to a test of
rhythm involving tapping a drumstick at several different
intervals and then gave the men a 60-question psychometric
test, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday. "The rhythmic
accuracy in brain activity that is observed when a person
maintains a steady beat is also important to the
problem-solving capacities measured with the intelligence
tests," Ullen said. "We found that people with high general
intelligence were also more stable on a very simple timing
task," he said. "We also found that these participants had
larger volumes of the white matter in the brain, which
contains connections between brain regions."
