Good Morning,
This morning I read an article about the X Prize foundation
offering $10M to a team that can produce a vehicle that can
get 100+ miles per gallon. With the price of gas, this
invention cannot come soon enough. Here is a link to the
article I read...

Until Tomorrow,

Hissing cockroaches may trigger allergies
Madagascar hissing cockroaches might be gentle creatures, but
U.S. scientists have discovered they can be hosts to many
species of mold. The large size, odd sounds and low-maintenance
of the insects have made the species popular educational tools
and pets, Ohio State University researchers said. But the giant
roaches' hard bodies and feces are home to many mold species
that could trigger allergies in people who handle them.
OSU scientists identified 14 different types of mold on and
around the hissing cockroach, including several associated
with allergies or that can cause secondary infections if they
enter the lungs or an open wound. "We are not criticizing
their use," said OSU doctoral candidate Joshua Benoit, lead
author of the study. "We are just saying that if you handle
these cockroaches, you should wash your hands when you're
done. "It's not a pet you can ignore," he added. "Without
regular cleaning, feces will build up, and the old exoskeletons
they shed will build up. And that's where a lot of the problems
happen." The research that included Jay Yoder and Brian Glenn
of Wittenberg University and Lawrence Zettler of Illinois
College appears in the journal Mycoses.

Sand found orbiting new solar system
U.S.-led astronomers have found the first evidence of small
sandy particles orbiting a newborn solar system. Rice
University Assistant Professor Christopher Johns-Krull, one
of the study's authors, said the finding sheds light on how
Earth-like planets might form. "Precisely how and when planets
form is an open question," said Johns-Krull. "We believe the
disk-shaped clouds of dust around newly formed stars condense,
forming microscopic grains of sand that eventually go on to
become pebbles, boulders and whole planets." In previous
studies, astronomers used infrared heat signals to identify
microscopic dust particles around distant stars, but the
method can't determine how big they become, and whether the
particles orbit near the star or at a greater distance.
In the new study, Johns-Krull and co-authors in the United
States, Germany and Uzbekistan used reflected light from the
sand to confirm the Earth-like orbit of grainy particles
around a pair of stars called KH-15D in the constellation
Monoceros. The stars are about 2,400 light years from Earth
in the Cone Nebula, and they are only about 3 million years
old, compared to the sun's 4.5 billion years, the researchers
said. The study appears in the online edition of the journal
Nature.

Fish cell regeneration study to aid humans
The ability of zebrafish to regenerate nearly any cell type
is helping U.S. scientists mimic cell loss that occurs in
diseases such as Parkinson's and diabetes. "What we are
pinning everything on is the idea that humans also have this
capacity, but it's sort of locked up," said Jeff Mumm, a
biologist at the Medical College of Georgia. "The forefront
of medicine is not what humans are limited to, but what biology
can do," said Mumm. "This little fish is telling us what biology
is capable of. With the same general set of genetic tools,
these animals can do something we can't: regenerate lost cells
and tissues. Our job is to figure out which tools in which
combination or sequence afford fish this capacity, then apply
this knowledge toward the creation of regenerative therapies
for humans." He noted Harvard researchers reported evidence
of the zebrafish's regenerating ability showing that within
two months of the removal of 20 percent of a zebrafish's
heart, the organ had grown back. Mumm and colleague Meera Saxena
have founded the company Luminomics Inc., to help researchers
explore such possibilities for humans.
