--WHAT TO DO AND SEE:
Bingham Canyon Copper Mine
Mine, Airport and Greater Salt Lake Valley
Depending on your point of view, the Bingham Copper Mine
is either a marvel of human engineering or simply a great
big eyesore. This enormous open-pit mine measures nearly
2½ mi across and ¾ mi deep -- the result of removing 5
billion tons of rock. Since operations began nearly 90
years ago by the Kennecott Utah Copper company, more than
12 million tons of copper have been produced. You can
view the mine from an overlook, but be sure to check on
hours before making the 22-mi trip here (take I-15 to the
7200 South Street exit; drive south to 7800 South Street,
then west to Route 48, which leads to the mine). At the
visitor center, exhibits and multimedia presentations
explain the history and present-day operation of the mine.
Outside, trucks the size of dinosaurs, and cranes as tall
as apartment buildings continue to reshape the mountain.

Children's Museum of Utah
Museum/Gallery, Capitol Hill
The museum's goal is to "create the love of learning
through hands-on experience," and that's exactly what
it does. Children can pilot a jetliner, draw with
computers, dig for mammoth bones, or lose themselves
in the many other interactive exhibits. Admission is
free on Friday after 5 PM. The Children's Museum is
moving to a larger building in the Gateway Center

Clark Planetarium
Observatory/Planetarium, Downtown
The Hansen Star Theatre and 3-D IMAX Theatre comprise
this Salt Lake County facility completed in 2003. The
Star Theatre uses state-of-the-art technology to
simulate three-dimensional flights through space. In
addition, the planetarium is home to the state's only
IMAX theater. Hands-on exhibits and science
paraphernalia fill the "Wonders of the Universe"

The Gateway
Neighborhood/Street, Downtown
Thirty acres of shopping, entertainment, restaurants,
offices, and housing cover the area called the Gateway.
The Olympic Legacy Plaza stands in memory of the 2002
Winter Olympics, which were held in Salt Lake City,
with an Olympic Snowflake Fountain and a Wall of Honor
listing all the Olympic volunteers. Entertainers
continue to perform regularly in the plaza and through-
out the Gateway. The fountain on the plaza is still a
magnet, as young and old scamper between jets of water
shooting into the air. Music accompanies the fountain
on the half hour. The Gateway resembles shopping
centers in Europe with its narrow street and wide
sidewalks. Traffic is not a problem because two parking
lots make access easy. Walk between the two levels via
a system of elevators and escalators. Some of the
stores and eateries here are part of national chains,
but many are locally grown enterprises. Cummings Studio
Chocolates, for example, ranks with the best in the
world. If you're interested in some exercise, you can
climb the 76-ft high climbing wall at Galyan's for $2.
For less challenging entertainment, the Clark
Planetarium and a large movie complex are also here.

Trolley Square
Store/Mall, East Side
From 1908 to 1945, this sprawling redbrick structure
garaged nearly 150 trolleys and electric trains for the
Utah Light and Railway Company. In the face of more
contemporary modes of transport, however, the facility
was closed. In the early 1970s the mission-style edifice
was completely overhauled, and today it's one of the
West's more intriguing retail centers, with more than

case with this artful café, full of street signs and

the occasional hearty lamb stew or paella. Desserts are
